    Involving and Deeply Moving.
I totally enjoyed Ron Carlson's last novel FIVE SKIES, enough not to hesitate for a moment when his latest novel appeared recently on Audible. Again, a vivd exploration of the wild backcountry, and the wilderness of the soul. Mac, a rancher battling a crippling mortgage, searches for redemtion after a fall into darkeness. A deep penitration story, with perfectly paced laconic narration. Involving and moving. Highly recommended.

    Publisher's Summary:
Dawn's only source of security and comfort, it seems, is Chuck, a pit-bull mix from the pound. So, when her boyfriend announces that he's leaving her for another woman, a despairing Dawn turns to Chuck for solace. "I should have said something sooner," Chuck confides, as he tries to console her. "Couldn't you smell her on his pants?"
Dawn is stunned. It's one thing to talk to your pets, but what do you do when they start talking back? It's not just Chuck, either; she can hear all dogs - and man's best friend has a lot to say.
The ever-enthusiastic Chuck offers his tried-and-true advice on the merits of knocking over garbage and strewing it everywhere, auxiliary competitive peeing etiquette, and the curative powers of tossing a ball. Doubtful of her own sanity, Dawn considers that, in the ways of life and love, it might be better to trust Chuck's doggie instincts instead of her own.
    Editorial Reviews:
Animal instincts come to Dawn Tarnauer's rescue in Walking in Circles Before Lying Down, a love story about a girl's best friend: her dog. Audiobook performer Renée Raudman voices the feisty Dawn in a dishy, relatable way, making her ups and downs appealing to listeners, from the moment Dawn leaves her second husband when she discovers he's gay, to that fateful day at the pound when she falls in love with an adorable 8-month-old pit bull mix. That pit bull, Chuck, turns out to have a special connection with Dawn: He can speak to her. In fact, it turns out Dawn can understand all dogs. And their advice is something she takes to heart, in this spunky tale of a single girl figuring out life and love.
    Critic Reviews:

    Perfect!!!!
Laugh out loud funny for anyone who loves dogs. Started calling my dog Chuck! Merrill Markoe can obviously read puppy minds! I highly recommend. Have suggested this book to many and I have yet to get anything but an enthusiastic two thumbs up
    I loved this book!
First of all, I rarely read fiction. I have more of a self help, history, and sociology kind of library. But my cousin talked me into this listen and I have to admit, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The story revolves around a woman who finds out that she can talk to dogs after a breakup with an unfaithful boyfriend (the dog says "You didn't know? Couldn't you smell her on his pants?") Add to that, a ditzy mother, a spacey sister, and an assortment of unsuitable love interests, and you've got a book that kept me smiling as I was tooling down the highway. It's really well written and the narrator had enough of a repertoire of voices to keep all characters clear in your mind's eye. I can't wait to read/listen to more of this author's books.
You gotta love a dog named Chuck
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Walking in circles before lying down is a great book, but as usual I enjoyed reading the book more then listening to it.

"A beautifully crafted debut historical work that is at once a tender love story, a murder mystery, and a brilliant sociological and political portrait of a turbulent time." (Library Journal (starred review and Editor's Pick)
    Members Reviews:
    Not completely what I expected
The narration is wonderful and as others have noted the characters are interesting, the historical details are fleshed out well but about half way through the book, I realized that this is a romance novel of the steamy sort...not my choice for listening. I don't think many can write sex scenes without appearing cliche & laughable. I finally got fed up and deleted the book before finishing.
I wished I had read Deborah's review before purchasing.
    Disappointing
This novel started out with two fascinating characters: Stewart Jameson, a Scottish "face-painter" and escapee from debtors' prison who had made his way across the Atlantic; and Fannie Easton, a disgraced young woman from a well-to-do Boston family who, disguised as a boy, becomes Jameson's apprentice. The descriptions of colonial life and the pre-revolutionary politics were also intriguing, as was the murder mystery that ensues. But unfortunately, about 2/3 of the way through, the authors allowed their novel to descend into drek. A love story is to be expected in a historical novel, as well as the few obligatory passion scenes. But the last third focused on little but detailed sex scenes. We had to watch Fannie and Jamie going at it in every room, on every floor, against every wall, and on every piece of furniture in the house, in all its variations. Even what should have been a tender parting scene ends up with Jamie dragging Fannie into a stairwell for some "back-door" action. This was especially creepy after reading that the co-authors wrote the book by flashing emails back and forth; it was almost as if they were playing a game of "Can You Top This?" or, worse still, trying to get each other going. I'm no prude (I even liked On Chesil Beach), I just hate it when the sex is both unecessary to the story and obviously thrown in for mere titillation. The authors, two noted historians, certainly had more to offer us.
    BRILLIANT - surprising story
Would you consider the audio edition of Blindspot to be better than the print version?
yes - without the accent and humor of John Lee the story just wouldn't be the same.
What did you like best about this story?
    The surprising love story
What does John Lee and Cassandra Campbell bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
John Lee has a scottish(?) brogue that adds so much to his character, he reads the story as if it was actually happening at that moment.

At last we see Darcy as he really is; and, beneath his polite facade, we find a sensitive, private and passionate man.
    Members Reviews:
    Why another P&P homage?
...because so many of us keep reading them. I doubt I would be seen in public with this book, let alone admit how much I enjoyed it, but read (or listen) to Austen spin-offs I do, and Audible is, well, anonymous and filled wih other P&P compulsives.
This Darcy tumbles with maid servants, actually supervises work at Pemberly, carouses with former Cambridge classmate Lord Byron, and can be inconvenienced by too tight britches; however, he still is not as villianous as much of the male gentry of his day. He is, of course, set back on course by "a fine pair of brown eyes." While this version of Darcy is not a monk, his antics aren't, thankfully, detailed for us. Such attempts only stain the cult of P&P, and from these I abstain in memory of Austen's brave example of NOT cashing in on fallen women as was routine in novels of her time.
As P&P re-tellings go, this is good: more detailed than the similar novel "Darcy's Story;" not as humourous (but much better narrated) than the Pamela Aidan Darcy trilogy; not as smutty as others that go on to imagine the married life of the Darcys.
Also this Darcy hints of the broader world: the Regency, PM Percival, war with France, industrialization, etc. It details a bit more of servant life. Georgina is imagined in more detail, and even Mr Hurst has some character (though not a very good one).
The narrator affects a haughty upper crust tone which might not be to everyone's ear, so listen carefully to the sample.
Face it, if you're reading this review and you've read other Darcy novels, you want to read the present one anyway. If you haven't read any of the others, this is as good as any to start. You don't need to have memorized P&P to enjoy the novel, but it helps.
I'm still waiting for a P&P re-told entirely from the servants' perspective; either that or a self-help book for compulsive P&P readers.
    A waste of time
I am disappointed as this is the worst telling I have yet to read. Darcy is no gentleman, he is no better than Wickham. I cannot even finish listening to it because he is a pig. I find that there is nothing for Elizabeth to like as he looks down on her, he is taking whores to bed and the maids in the house. The book doesn't share the same details that are in Pride and Prejudice at all. His mother did not die at childbirth also he is in London alot when his character is supposed to be at Netherfield. This a poor telling of Darcy and I would not recommend this to anyone.
Silly (but in a good, happy way)
I love a good Austen spin-off! Mr Darcy's Diary is entertaining and the narrator, David Rintoul does a really good characterisation of Mr Darcy (read: he has a bit of a dishy voice.. :P )
I found the inclusion of Lord Byron a bit of an odd addition to the story.

    Critic Reviews:
"The curse of this haunting book is that you read it too fast." (New Yorker)
    Members Reviews:
    Good but not his best
I will always give a Tim Winton novel a go and this one started off well. His usual colourful characters and upbeat descriptions. The storyline gets frustrating and the end is even more so but this could be overlooked. The thing that can't be overlooked is the narration, which impedes greatly on any enjoyment of the book. He gives the Australian characters South African accents and his own delivery is monotonous and tedious. All the way through, I kept thinking of how much better Humphrey Bower would have done it.
    Brilliant mad goose chase
If you could sum up The Riders in three words, what would they be?
    Wake up men!
What did you like best about this story?
This is not a story about a rugged Aussie who stumbles down a - nearly incredible- nightmarish slope bringing along with him the little he loves, but about your typical, average male who missed the plot somewhere down the road regards his other half. How could he have been so wrong? That's not the mystery of women for you, but the mess they themselves can be too, and failing to acknowledge this in time. This is a tale about maturation as a male - the hard way - without becoming bitter, tougher and rougher; just a little smarter, and more emotionally independent hopefully.
Have you listened to any of Stanley McGeaghs other performances? How does this one compare?
Stanley is always brilliant. I like that he has an English accent but can do any other one with persuasion. This book fares well on the different accents/voices, helping you to concentrate on Winton's very elegant writing around the direct speech better.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Winton writes purely out of emotion and that stirs you in every way possible.
    Any additional comments?
Wish Breath and Dirt Music were available as audiobooks. The Riders and Eyrie of all those available are possible the most accessible to readers outside Australia.
    Waste of time
The storyline gets frustrating and the end is even more so. This is definitly the first and last audiobook of Tim Winton for me.
    No story in it
Be warned - there is no story to it. There is a setting, believable (yet extremely annoying) characters, some questions asked at the beginning, but this is it. The books gets more and more tedious and frustrating until it ends in nothing at all.
The narrator wasn't my favourite either - he had an unnatural high creepy voice for females and children. I liked Irish accent though.
A heart in the mouth tale
A well written tale of hope and loss, a quest for answers, and a lesson in the futility of it all. You'll back Scully, Billie's father, and mourn with him and despise him before coming back around again at the end.

    Magnficent
Another brilliant book from Patrick Gale. All the elements we have come to expect - fantastic characterisation, insightful study of family dynamics, several points of view, twists and turns along the way. The idea of beginning each chapter with a note from an exhibition seems like the kind of thing I wouldn't like, but it was great actually. Well worth a credit.
    Wonderful
One of the best audiobooks I have listened to. Just loved it and Steven Pacey's reading made it all the more enjoyable. Highly recommended. Please can we have some more of Patrick Gale's books ready by Steven Pacey. Thank you - just wonderful.
    Wonderful
I don't often give books 5 stars, but this one really deserved it. An intriguing and well-constructed plot, believable and interesting characters, fine, subtle writing without any pretentiousness - what more could you want? It was beautifully-read, too. I was really sorry when it came to an end - but hurrah! The ending was satisfying, and not cliched or predictable.
    A difficult book to like
I bought this book because it is narrated by Stephen Pacey, and because I like 'relationship' books. The idea for the structure is interesting - that each episode is linked to a picture from the posthumous exhibition of Rachel Kelly's work - but in the end it's unsatisfyingly 'clever' and confuses more than it explains, because of the way it jumps around in time. The only real problem with an audio book, especially if you are listening while on the drive home from work, is that you can't flick back to previous chapters to find the thread of a character's story, so just have to press on and hope things will be explained by the end. And that is the main fault with this book. It just stops, and misses out the most important scene in the lives of all the characters. I could see it coming, in tantalising (but self-conscious) snippets, but it would seem the last picture in the exhibition is missing.
Beautifully read by Stephen Pacey but I don't think I'll bother with any more Patrick Gale.
    Confusing
I really wanted to enjoy and get into this book but I struggled. I found my mind wandering a lot and in the vain hope that it would eventually all come together, it just didnt and then just stopped. I didnt understand it at all and I listened over and over to see if I had missed something. I found myself looking for a missing chapter.
