Author who inspired Agatha Christie

Keep in mind when this was written, and you will really enjoy this book. The language and mores are of a bygone era, but that is part of what I loved. If you are looking for blood and guts this is not your novel. If you like being transported to another time and place through the vehicle of a mystery -- this is for you.

Very tame

Interesting as period pieces, the stories are pretty tame by today's standards. No action and lacking the depth of a Sherlock Holmes story. Although the stories can be interesting, they typically do not provide the reader with clues that would allow you to solve the crime yourself. Not a lot of depth, so listening to the stories back-to-back, they tend to get boring. The narrator does an excellent job of presenting the stories.

A fun Mystery and dective set in the late 1800's!

I really liked this book! It is set in the late 1800's and has as the dectective Violet Strange who is a society girl. I enjoyed how she deduced things and also the mystery of her own life of why she was a detective herself. I recommend it! :-)

This is a series of short stories of the society girl, Violet Strange, who does detective work. The stories are very enjoyable and a bit dated since they take place at the turn of the 19th century. I really enjoyed this series.

Too frustrating to listen random chapters

The chapters in audible bear no resemblance to the short stories making it very difficult to listen to.

Wonderful characters and a Message, too

Having read the Shipping News, I figured this might be a good read with interesting characters and I was not wrong at all. Annie is a master of the descriptive phrase. She doesn't miss a detail. Narration in this book is excellent, adding greatly to the "feel" of the book. My Dad grew up in the Panhandle, so this made this all the more interesting. And it does speak volumes about big industry and our environment, especially telling in today's political atmosphere, where it seems like we are doing our best to gut our environment in a short-sighted frenzy to make a buck.

If you enjoy a "craftsman" of the written word, then you'll love Annie Proulx.

Fantastic!

This book paints a vivid portrait of the Texas Panhandle - the scenery (breathtaking), the weather (unpredictable), and especially the people (strong, eccentric). It tells the story of a young man's journey from Denver to the panhandle to find land for corporate hog farms. He becomes part of the local community and in his search for hog farm sites (and hog farms are highly unpopular among the locals) he begins to get a sense of what he really wants to do with his life. The local characters that inhabit this story are absolutely delightful and the reader does a superb job, giving each character a voice and making you feel that you are right there in the room with them. Fantastic!

solid writing and terrific narrator

this was a charming book - well-written - with characters you felt you knew by the end. The narrator was fantastic and you will delight in simply hearing the phrases flow by. Here Proulx creates a lush 'texture' you feel immersed in.

Slow and fragmented

Some novels are intended to be epic. This means that they wind on an on for ever while you keep waiting for the story to take off. Maybe the next chapter will be a little more interesting?

Annie Proulx excels at writing epic novels where the tide of events runs slower than the Don. Her characters are like butterflies, slowly finding their way across a meadow by turning this way and that way.

A great book 2 of the Otherkin trilogy.

I was well pleased with the way this book held up the story started in the first book, Otherkin. The characters are growing, learning and still making mistakes. You cheer when they win, cry when they lose and bite your nails until you know which way it's going to go. I was very glad I already had the third book so I didn't have to suffer at the end of this book wondering what was happening with these people I have come to love.

Love this series

Great storyline. Great character growth throughout. This series makes you want to finish them one after the other. New favorite Author!

Wonderful!

Eeeek! This book was just as good as the first and I am eagerly waiting for a third! I was unable to put this book down and finished both books in a day. I enjoy Dez, I think she is a great character, well developed and relatable. I also really love Lazar and am hoping that he is the man for Dez!

My oldest daughter got the first book and read it just a few days. She loved it sooooo much she did a book report on it.

Othermoon review

Otherkin is my favorite book so when I bought othermoon I freaked out. I love the characters and think that their animal form fit their personality very well. I can't wait to read the next book.

Loved it!

Even if I wasn't a baseball fan, I would have loved this book. It's about talent, ambition, consequences, confidence, friendship, arrogance, doubt, and so much more.

Not just for baseball fans!

As a Brit with no knowledge of Baseball I was a little sceptical about this book but having read some great reviews in the UK press I wanted to give it a try. I am a great fan of American Literature and I find that having a great narrator really makes or breaks a book for me, in this book Holter Graham is spot on for me.

I love the way Harbach is able to wind his way around life drawing us into the characters and through this thread in the baseball elements and make is so very readable/listenable.

Book Three in Pleasant Valley Series

If you enjoyed the previous books Pleasant Valley Book Series Books then you are sure to enjoy this one too. I love the fact that Ms. Perry always weaves in her previous characters from her earlier books ... keeps us up to date with old friends .... and this time she brought back Anna. Anna, who broke her sister, Leah's heart when she left her Amish family ... then she comes back as all things an unwed mother of a little girl! Leave it to Anna ... it deals with some of the issues that Anna experience previously which I truly enjoyed ... and I loved how she matured and we watched her grow. How she learned that Samuel was there for her ... and the heartbreak of Myra ... the compassion of family and all of a sudden she realized that they didn't make her feel smothered but comforted!

The other reviews go into depth over the storyline so I won't go there ... but just to say ... this is definitely another book worth reading ... and I already can't wait for #4!

Have to admit, however, that not only am I a truly lover of Christian Fiction ... but absolutely adore reading Amish Fiction!

Great Story

If you read the first 2 books in this series, you really must read Anna's Return. It can be read as a stand alone, but will be enjoyed so much more if you read Leah's Choice and Rachel's Garden first. This might be the best of the 3 stories. Anna runs back to her Amish roots and family when someone threatens to take away her adopted daugther. Anna is fiercely independent and would do anything to protect her baby. But, she has a history of running away at the first sign of trouble. She learned that her family and her community along with God will always be there to protect her and love her...even be willing to die for her and her baby. This is a touching Amish romance with a hint of mystery that Marta Perry puts in many of her books.

I highly recommend this book. If you like Amish romance books, you will enjoy author Marta Perry. Her characters are strong, independent, and intelligent but still true to their Amish Faith and heritage. Love her stories.

A good Amish Series

All of the Pleasant Valley series are quick, enjoyable reads.

A great listen and well written story that kept me hooked. The narrator was excellent and really brought the story to life. I dont usually listen to books in this category, but will be looking for more from this author in the future.

Kidnapping by pirates at sea.

I thought that this audio book was an okay story. It had some exciting scenes and I liked the cube and its creators intention. The narrator was good at narration, but his attempt to do different character voices were lacking. I reviewed this audio book after receiving an advanced copy that I requested.

Story is okay, but narration drags

The story is pretty good and moves along, but the narration is a bit distracting. The accents are a bit clunky and I had trouble staying focused.

Unique setting for a mild thriller . . .

This story was pretty good, with likeable characters in a somewhat farfetched plot surrounding the possession of a scientific invention and the extremes people will go to obtain and protect all that it involves. Friends, professors, lovers, terrorists, and Filipinos interact on a crazy adventure. Not really thriller in the true sense of the word, but the tale does manage to keep one's attention peaked.

The descriptions of the landscapes, climates, and culture work well, along with some history of the Philippines intermingled made the listen even more enjoyable. The main drawback that I experienced was with the narration. Although Bill Johnston made a great effort to to give the characters their individual voices, often times it came across as being too strained. His naturally deep voice worked well until he tried to portray a high-pitched female voice, or an excited Filipino accent. The changes were just too abrupt and extreme for my liking. This was a decent story that has a lot of potential; I will be giving a listen to the second installment of this series (with a different narrator, too) in hopes of some nice development in both story-line and performance.

Interesting Thriller

This is the first thriller that I have listened to that showcased the Philippines. I learned a lot of history listening to this book. I thought the story was well written and the narrator impressed me with all of his various characters and their distinguishable voices. One could hear so many different accents and voices in his performance. The story was fast paced and kept me interested throughout. I enjoyed the history, the romance and the kidnapping. I requested this review copy audiobook and have voluntarily written this review. I will look for more books by this author and narrator in the future. The author did great with his imagery in this book.

Slow w too much unnecessary detail

Fell asleep while listening, sorry. Awoke and read the reviews. Then I put it on fast forward and skipped bits here & there to finish for a bookclub. Some things in a book don't need that much detail. Loved the important parts! Fantastic descriptions when needed.
