Just good

Michael Maloney is fine reader & he & the author keep interest up through all this good but not very good book. Do not approach expecting another " Birdsong" but those who are taken by novels of the Great War will want to read this.

Brilliant and deeply touching

A fantastic book that centres on a rarely explored area of the war and told by an incredible storyteller. Narration was generally excellent but slightly the wrong intonation at times.

Terrifying (Fictional) Chinese Adoption Ordeal

I think I would not want to read this book if I was a would-be adoptive parent. It was pretty terrifying -- everything that could go wrong did go wrong in this fictional account of American couples adopting babies in the Peoples' Republic of China.

The setting is at least a decade ago -- but it doesn't seem dated -- although I was silently thinking that "surely things have changed for the better" as I listened. The premise of the story is simple: Chinese babies are promised to and then given to American parents who immediately bond with their babies. Then greed, avarice and corruption interrupt the idyllic possibilities with demands that the babies be returned; and force difficult, even impossible decisions to be made. The main character of the story makes the decision not to relinquish her baby as directed by the Chinese police and thus begins the hiding, running and overcoming to save one little life--that of a baby girl who has stolen her adoptive mother's heart; and soon wins over her adoptive brother too.

This is a good story, but one that has so many "problems" crop up that it is a bit daunting to keep up with all of them. Goodness wins in the end, but not without a great deal of heartache, some violence and death in the process.

Intelligent humor, best unabridged

McCall Smith is currently writing two novels in daily instalments in British newspapers. This is the third part of the one set in Corduroy Mansions, London. The chapters narrate the lives of several of its inhabitants.

You won't like this if you are looking for lots of suspense in a novel. It's more like being part of people's life for a while. Pretty day-to-day things are happening to them, they are falling in and out of love, get or lose jobs, sometimes rather absurd events come their way.

If you like Alexander McCall Smith, you will like this audio book. Fortunately, it's unabridged and therefore maintains all its fine humor. The reader does a convincing job communicating this humor and the empathy towards the characters that make this unconventional novel so loveable.

I only wish audible would publish unabridged versions of 44 Scotland Street, McCall's other daily novel, set in Edinburgh.

Great narrator!

I wish this narrator did all of McCall's audibles! gorgeous voice. Plus, courduroy mansions is such a great and easy read!

Evelyn Waugh Revisited

This really reminded me of Waugh's work (which I love) and that was strangely unsettling because there were a lot of modern references to technology... yet this story really felt as if it belonged in the 1930s or 40s. I liked it, and enjoyed listening to it, but I couldn't say I was utterly compelled or drawn in by any of the characters. It was very much an ensemble piece. Nice if you're on a long journey, or doing the iroing!

A great read!

The author reflects humourosly and seriously about everyday life. He uses incidents in the lives of the residents of the flats in an old mansion and in the lives of their friends in order to provide an opportunity to reflect on ethical dilemmas and everyday challenges

Andrew Sachs does a fantastic job narrating the book.

Terrible reader

The reader spoiled this book for me. I love to hear the books read aloud by great readers; this woman is not one. It sounds as though she didn't read the book before recording it. She puts the emphasis on the wrong word in sentences and never gets a rhythm going. The 'voice' she adopts for the narrator sounds neither like a 14 year old girl nor like an adult remembering what it was like to be 14. I will pick up the book and read it to myself, I guess. Sorry to be so negative, but other buyers should be forewarned.

I really enjoyed the story; made me a bit nostalgic for my childhood girlfriends. But the narrator was not appropriate for this story. She sounded like Betty White reading a children's book. I got used to the voice and was able to finish the book but a different narrator would have made this a really memorable listen.

Best book in a long time

Loved this book! The reader was fine, the story was superlative. It was like time travel. The writing is crisp, observant, wry, and spot on. It made me miss my best friend relationships of early adolescents and made my heart ache for what is ahead for my daughter. This book deserves awards, awards, awards.

Beard's own coming of age story, poignant, funny, honest, and engaging. One of the best I've ever read.

Very poor narration for a decent story

What did you like best about In Zanesville? What did you like least?

As a pre-teen/teen in the mid to late '70's, I identified with much of the lead character's experiences. However, the narrator spoiled the book for me. She took breaths in the middle of sentences and phrases, sounded like an elderly woman who has had one too many cigarettes (not at all like the teen girl telling the story) - I was very surprised at the choice of narrator for this book. I have younger friends who really enjoyed reading this book (not listening to the audiobook). I wish I had read the book instead of getting the audible version.

A story of the people left behind

There has been a lot said about his book, it's author and how it came to be published. What many have failed to highlight was the story of the people displaced by war and those who would pilfer from a neighbour rather than ask. The story of how life is a struggle for the locals left to get on with an occupying force. Love. Hate. Murder. It's all in this book which has made the leap from paperback to audiobook beautifully.

Brilliant narration of this intelligent book.

Loved this! Read as well as listened to this beautiful, intelligent and heartrending account of human behaviour in a small provincial town in France overwhelmed by the invading German army in the 1940s. Provincial jealousies, self righteous arrogance and bitter resentments, desires and dreams frustrated by occupation but also with empathy for the soldiers of an occupying army. The exodus from Paris as the Germans march in - fears magnifying intrenched behaviours of selfishness, possessiveness and class divisions.

A tapestry of humanity in microcosm at a time of extreme stress.

Just brilliant

Suite Française is even better than I had expected. It is so revealing of the events at the beginning of the Second World War in France, the attitude of both the French and the occupying German soldiers. It is extremely well written and although there are many characters they are easy to follow through the story. They come to life, their inner thinking explored. They feel very real. I felt a whole gamut of emotions for each of them as if I had actually known them personally.

The reading is clear and exact and in tune with each situation and character. A great book, an excellent narrator.

Great story that really sucks you in! It's not very often I come across a book that I sit in my car to listen to even thought I'm where I wanted to go! Easy to listen too and not predictable whatsoever!

Dreadful

I love horse books. This story sounded good in the synopsis, but it was dreadful. Listening to this book was so boring. The characters were not well developed nor was the story. The writer also knows nothing about horses and horsemanship. Don't waste your money or time on this one

What disappointed you about If Wishes Were Horses?

I guess because I am a horse lover and the fact that I worked on a breeding farm for many years things that he said in the book were irritating. You cannot tell the sex of a foal with an ultrasound at late stage gestation. Horses dont typically stand around in their stalls with bridles on, halters maybe but not bridles. And when foals are born, people DO NOT cut the umbilical cord! Just made the story a bit goofy and unbelievable.

What could Robert Barclay have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

The author should have done his research on horses if he wanted to have them as the backdrop for his book!

I could not put this down, even though I was pretty sure how it would end I could not Tristan had a vulnerability about him that I wanted to see taken care of and knew Sheri had enough spunk to cure him. I suggest this as a very good read.

Tristan guards his heart just as forcefully as he protects his privacy and while he thinks he is fond of Sheri, I couldn't wait for him to finally clue in on the fact that fondness had nothing to do with his real feelings for his lovely assistant. Sheri's character is braver than I. I think I would have run seeing myself on the pages of a tabloid but she takes everything in stride and continues to be just as loyal and loving to Tristan as she ever was.
