Publisher's Summary:
Heart-wrenching, absorbing and magical, Relativity is an irresistible novel about science, love, unbreakable bonds and irreversible acts.
Ethan is a bright young boy obsessed with physics and astronomy who lives with his mother, Claire. Claire has been a wonderful parent to Ethan, but he's becoming increasingly curious about his father's absence in his life, wanting to fill in the gaps.
Claire's life is centred on Ethan; she is fiercely protective of her talented, vulnerable son and of her own feelings. When Ethan falls ill, tied to a tragic event from when he was a baby, Claire's tightly held world is split open.
On the other side of the country, Mark is trying to forget about the events that tore his family apart. Then a sudden and unexpected call home forces him to confront his past and the hole in his life that was once filled with his wife, Claire, and his son, Ethan.
When Ethan secretly intercepts a letter from Mark to Claire, he unleashes long-suppressed forces that - like gravity - pull the three together again, testing the limits of love and forgiveness.

Complex and beautiful
The writing is so fluid and sophisticated. Who knew reading about physics would be so moving? Literally moved from emotion to emotion right alongwith the story. I experienced such a range of feelings toward the same characters. Lovely work about the power of forgiveness.
The boy who can see physics
Loved the blend of interesting science and family story in this complex and beautiful novel. Such a well-written book, so many of the sentences were like jewels. Ethan was such a finely drawn and magical character. The boy who can see physics will stay with me for a long time. Relativity is an excellent debut from Antonia Hayes that really made me think.
Physics and strong emotions mixed to create a powerful and unforgettable story
Two extremely contrasting themes dominate this novel; on the one hand the intimate world of a couple with a difficult marriage and a child finding his way through the beginnings of puberty, and on the other, the universe as revealed by the theories of twenty-first century physics. Incredibly, the author pulls it off. The novel centres around Ethan, and 11-year-old boy with an obsession with physics and a difficulty dealing with the world around him. Some of the characters are physicists, my strong connection with the novel might result from my own career as a physicist; the scenes which take place in the Sydney University School of Physics were particularly real to me. But the novelâs strength is in its writing, which brings the three characters to life in a way which is heart-rending as they confront some frightening events which have made Ethan the way he is. Oh, and I had finished the book before I realised that the 3 main characters have the initials E, M and C. I hope to hear more from this writer.
Best book I have read in a long time
A book that took me on a roller coaster of emotions. Could not put it down.
Five Stars
