Entirely captivating stories of some of the "ordinary, little people" in history
I was immediately engrossed in these few historical periods and wish I could read more of the characters. I loved the shy, good reluctant bridegroom, stammering awfully and five feet tall who really does find someone to love him against all odds and the little Roman boy Angelus leading an escaping charming princess and her party through a swamp in hopes of earning enough to provide for his weak elderly grandmother (who is about 48 years old!). The periods are terribly alive, the storytelling wonderful...one has short glimpses of these people and some others and somehow you feel you have known them a long time and want to see them about. And yet it is wonderful to have them just in these brief times in their lives, the way we often meet people we like immensely, get very involved with their lives for a few days or weeks, and years after, remember them with great fondness!
