The Widow of Dartmoor
It was a pleasure to read Warwick Downing's latest novel, The Widow of Dartmoor. Whether or not you are a Sherlock Holmes fan you will find Downing's well-crafted sequel to Hound of the Baskervilles to be spirited and entertaining. The premise, unexpected events begin to unfold for some of the principal characters in one of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's best loved works. Downing introduces us to an 1891 London and a new protagonist, Jeremy Holmes, a brilliant barrister and the illegitimate son of Sherlock Holmes oldest brother. Rudely referred to by some of the more haughty members of the London Bar as "The Bastard," Holmes considerable courtroom skills are already well known. Those skills will be tested, however, not only in the legal arena but also through his ability to persevere against unexpected and diverse adversaries.
When Beryl Russell, the owner of a highly regarded London dress shop, is discovered removing the body of a man from her shop in the middle of the night, she becomes the prime suspect in his demise and is charged with murder. The victim, a young and charming Professor, Christian Vandeleur, is a renowned naturalist with no apparent enemies. As the drama unfolds, questions arise as to who would want to kill him and for what possible reason. And, finally, what is the connection between Professor Vandeleur and several other possible suspects to the crime?
Jeremy Holmes legal representation of Beryl Russell encounters several twists and serious snags. Then, when Beryl's husband, the rich and powerful Lord Russell, is offended he seeks recourse through a duel under strict and deadly rules. Holmes is required to resort to survival skills learned years before as a child in a foreign land. This powerful sequence raises particular questions of courage and ethics when faced with a life or death challenge.
The final sequences of the book involve a courtroom drama where a panel of determined judges and a strong willed jury must sort out the matters brought before them. When the web is untangled and the truth unfurled, the story becomes complete. The apparent murderer, though, has disappeared. We are then left to wonder: will there be justice here and if so, in what fashion? And, what of the legendary and elusive Sherlock Holmes; has Downing left him out of this finely written book or does he emerge to play a role in the resolution of the matter? You will want to read the fast moving story to find out. Downing has packed a lot into this 234 page novel.
