Publisher's Summary:

Gaius Valerius Verrens returns to Rome from the successful campaign against Boudicca in Britain. Now hailed a Hero of Rome, Valerius is not the man he once was scarred both physically and emotionally by the battles he has fought, his sister is mortally ill, his father in self-imposed exile. And neither is Rome the same city as the one he left. The Emperor Nero grows increasingly paranoid. Those who seek power for themselves whisper darkly in the emperors ears. They speak of a new threat, one found within the walls of Rome itself.

A new religious sect, the followers of Christus, deny Neros divinity and are rumoured to be spreading sedition. Nero calls on his Hero of Rome to become a Defender of Rome, to seek out this rebel sect, to capture their leader, a man known as Petrus. Failure would be to forfeit his life, and the lives of 20,000 Judaeans living in Rome. But as Valerius begins his search, a quest which will take him to the edge of the empire, he will discover that success may cost him nearly as much as failure.

Great writer but the story is hurried

A great novel. However the biggest let down in this book is that it feels a bit hurried. Looking at Simon Scarrow or Bernard Cornwell in comparison you see a big difference in taking the time to set a scene and developing a story. It feels rushed, even though there is a lot of room for character development. Hopefully this will change later on in the series

Haven't Finished it, tried many times

This book is not as good as the 1st of the series, or at least so far. I've listened to about 2-3 hours of this story & the flow, action, & back story is just not as entertaining as 'Hero of Rome.' The narrator is the same so that isn't the problem & its interesting to see how he has dealt with what happened in 'Hero.' I will try to give it another chance at some point soon but I moved onto the Roman Legion Novels with Macro & Cato.

I find these books are very good but not quite in the same league as the Roman Legion books... But, Ludlow is still a great author

Brilliant

Where does Defender of Rome rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

One of the best historical fiction books i have listened to this year, if not all time. Douglas Jackson brings ancient Rome to life. Stunning attention to detail, and the narration by Cornelius Garrett just adds to the atmosphere. After listening to the first in the series (Hero of Rome), this was an automatic must have listen.

Have you listened to any of Cornelius Garretts other performances? How does this one compare?

I have listened to Hero of Rome, and this was defiantly next on the list. Well written, and well read.

Any additional comments?

If you like Historical fiction, and have listened to any of the "Vespasian" series by Robert Fabbri then this book will not disappoint.

Title: The Novice Unabridged

Subtitle: A Story of True Love

Author: Thich Nhat Hanh

Narrator: Dan Woren

Format: Unabridged

Length: 2 hrs and 38 mins

Language: English

Release date: 08-23-11

Publisher: HarperAudio

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 69 votes

Genres: Fiction, Historical

Publisher's Summary:

Best-selling author and Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh transforms an ancient folktale into a timeless parable of a young woman who dares to risk her life for her faith.

Born to an aristocratic family in rural Vietnam, Kinh Tams uncommon beauty and intelligence were obvious to all she encountered. From an early age she was drawn to the teachings of Buddha and the rewards of a monastic life, but to please her family she agreed to walk the traditional path of marriage.

Throughout her marriage, Kinh Tams mind was devoted to her husband but her heart never waivered from her true calling. She wanted to be a monk. And yet Buddhism was still new to Vietnam and temples accepted only men for ordination. Making a decision that would forever change her life, Kinh Tam left town, disguised herself as a man, and joined a monastery as a novice.

Despite the many challenges of living as a man, Kinh Tam thrived and became a beloved member of the community. Years of profound joy and peace passed until a local woman accuses the novice of fathering her unborn child. Kinh Tam is torn between two impossible choices: keep her secret and endure brutal punishment or reveal the truth that would prove her innocence but put an end to her spiritual path.

Facing the unbearable with the boundless heart of Buddha, her choice forever changes her life, her country, and her faith.

In spare, elegant prose, Thich Nhat Hanh reminds us that we, too, face our own injustices and suffering, and by connecting with love, we can, like Kinh Tam, discover a mind and heart that are peaceful, happy, and free.

The Novice..listened to on the way from WI to IL

If you could sum up The Novice Unabridged in three words, what would they be?

Beautiful Truthful and Magnificent

What other book might you compare The Novice Unabridged to and why?

Thich Nhat Hanh's Anger could be similar, although this book is a novel, and Hanh doesn't write many novels so this stands by itself.

Which character as performed by Dan Woren was your favorite?

Kinh Tam

Loved it

Would you listen to The Novice Unabridged again? Why?

I would listen to it again because it was inspirational.

What did you like best about this story?

It taught a spiritual lesson without being preachy.

Have you listened to any of Dan Worens other performances before? How does this one compare?

I had not listened to any other of Dan woren's performances before.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I enjoy listening to audible books while I travel in the car. It is rare for me to listen all in one sitting. This way I have something to look forward to besides the drivel on most radio stations.

A pleasant story in the Buddist tradition

Thich Nhat Hanh is a very gifted teacher of the subtle points of self inquiry. So, this story could be viewed as a guided meditation. It allows you to look at the theory that the river of thought, and emotion that is your life is just that, it passes, as a river would pass a certain point on a shoreline.

Members Reviews:

Mixed feelings

I have entirely mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand, it had a very slow start and I didn't really get invested in the characters' lives until halfway through the book. On the other, I loved that Nancy decided to write about Italian immigrants and the struggles they had, which is not something I've come across in books from this period. I enjoyed the details about dressmaking and while I wasn't so fussed about the mystery aspect of the book, I loved the conclusion. The plot suddenly got a lot more interested in the last 10% of this book, when the truth about Lucy's beau and Rowena's secret friend was revealed. I didn't expect either of these, and this definitely made me root for their prospective love interests. Sophia was more difficult to like, especially because of her immaturity, but bravo to Nancy for writing a character who wasn't particularly likeable! I liked the way Sophia's storyline ended in the epilogue, not totally happily-ever-after, but with hints of something good to come. But it's a bit unrealistic that all of the main characters ended up with men of a different class, and I'm not entirely sure that Rowena's parents would allow her to make such a lifestyle choice, even with her infirmity. That was another quirk about this novel - I don't often read books in which the heroine is disabled in some way, and I liked how the implications Rowena's infirmity impacted on her life and how she had to over come this. Rowena was probably my favourite character, just because Lucy seemed a bit too perfect at times, almost verging on self-righteous.

The book definitely got more interesting once it relocated to Newport, but this wasn't until halfway through the book, which was when the romance aspect appeared. If it weren't for the twists towards the end of the novel, I think I'd give this 3*, but as I didn't expect the truth about Lucy's beau or the identity of the childhood friend that Rowena was always talking about, I'll give the book 3.5*.

Title: The Ravenscar Dynasty

Author: Barbara Taylor Bradford

Narrator: Ric Jerrom

Format: Abridged

Length: 6 hrs and 25 mins

Language: English

Release date: 04-27-11

Publisher: Macmillan Audio

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 4 votes

Genres: Fiction, Historical

Publisher's Summary:

Barbara Taylor Bradford introduced the illustrious Harte family in her blockbuster A Woman of Substance. Now she has created an unforgettable new dynasty: the Deravenels.

On a bitterly cold day in 1904, the Deravenel familys future changes forever. When Cecily Deravenel tells her 18-year-old son, Edward, of the death of his father, brother, uncle, and cousin in a fire, a part of him dies as well. Edward and his cousin, Neville Watkins, are suspicious of the deaths. They vow to seek the truth, avenge the deaths, and retake control of their familys business empire.

As he grows into a handsome, charismatic man, Edward is torn between duty and desire. There are women in his life for whom hell risk everything - and one woman who might destroy him. But madness and secrecy lie at the heart of the family, and Edwards enemies are far more ruthless than he knows. He will need his strength more than ever when the house of Deravenel is fatally rocked by betrayal from within. Who will become the ultimate ruler of the Deravenels?

Power and money, passion and adultery, ambition and treachery all illuminate a dramatic epic saga that brings to life the glittering Edwardian Era. The Ravenscar Dynasty is based on the familial factions of Englands Wars of the Roses, brought to life by the magical, memorable storytelling power that is Barbara Taylor Bradford.

Members Reviews:

Not a good read

The story line did intrigue me. For that reason I endured what I felt to be tepid and frequently boring skills of story telling. It could have been great just based on the story. How sad it was so poorly written.

Brave But Futile Effort

"The Ravenscar Dynasty's" main character is patterned after the life of the intriguing British king, Edward IV. Other historical personages are used as models for characters, the Wylands as shadows of the Woodvilles in later English history, but for lack of something the analogies do not work. Great riches are at stake with endless power driven by twisted emotions that are more of a set piece than a story.

I own all of Ms. Bradford's books, but this time I'm not looking forward to reading "The Heir" and will wait for the paperback edition.

Conflict drives fiction and events are secondary -- there is nothing new in this story to tempt a reader to turn a page.

"The Ravenscar Dynasty" dwells too much on decoration and not enough on substance.

Love Barbara Taylor Bradford

This was a very good read. I always enjoy her books. I am re-reading many of them which I originally read years ago.

Title: The Report

Author: Jessica Francis Kane

Narrator: Graeme Malcom

Format: Unabridged

Length: 6 hrs and 9 mins

Language: English

Release date: 01-13-11

Publisher: Audible Studios

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 12 votes

Genres: Fiction, Historical

Publisher's Summary:

A stunning first novel that is an evocative reimagining of a World War II civilian disaster. Jessica Francis Kane paints a vivid portrait of London at war.

On a March night in 1943, on the steps of a London Tube station, 173 people die in a crowd seeking shelter from what seemed to be another air raid. When the devastated neighborhood demands an inquiry, the job falls to magistrate Laurence Dunne. As Dunne investigates, he finds the truth to be precarious, even damaging. When he is forced to reflect on his report several decades later, he must consider whether the course he chose was the right one.

The Report is a provocative, beautifully crafted novel and a commentary on the way all tragedies are remembered and endured.

Critic Reviews:

"[Kane] moves deftly among perspectives on the [Bethnal Green] catastrophe: We eavesdrop on war-battered townsfolk, the tardy policeman, the overburdened priest, the devastated shelter-chief who feels responsible. Kane's command of period detail is marvelous.... A deft, vivid first novel." (Kirkus Reviews)

Members Reviews:

One of the best narrators I've found.

Fantastic narrator, very strong acting skills but very subtle, trusts the listener to understand literature without overdramatizing it. Highly recommend

Superb!

Excellent, complex, beautifully written story about the Bethnal Green bomb shelter disaster of 1943, focusing less on the event itself than on the lives of people involved in it..

Title: The Traitor's Wife

Subtitle: A Novel

Author: Kathleen Kent

Narrator: Ellen Archer

Format: Unabridged

Length: 8 hrs and 38 mins

Language: English

Release date: 11-05-10

Publisher: Hachette Audio

Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 44 votes

Genres: Fiction, Historical

Publisher's Summary:

This novel was originally published under the title The Wolves of Andover.

In the harsh wilderness of colonial Massachusetts, Martha Allen works as a servant in her cousin's household, taking charge and locking wills with everyone. Thomas Carrier labors for the family and is known both for his immense strength and size and his mysterious past. The two begin a courtship that suits their independent natures, with Thomas slowly revealing the story of the role he played in the English Civil War. But in the rugged new world they inhabit, danger is ever present, whether it be from the assassins sent from London to kill the executioner of Charles I or the wolves-in many forms-who hunt for blood. At once a love story and a tale of courage, The Traitor's Wife confirms Kathleen Kent's ability to craft powerful stories from the dramatic background of America's earliest days.

Members Reviews:

Somewhat Disappointing

The Wolves of Andover serves as a prequel to Kent's The Heretic's Daughter, but it falls a bit short. The story of Charles II's relentless pursuit of the men directly responsible for his father's beheading, even to the extent of sending assassins to find them in the American colonies, is certainly an intriguing one, and Kent does a fine job of describing the hardscrabble life of the New England settlers. What put me off was, I think, the rather stereotypical characters. Martha, the protagonist, is what one would call a "spirited" girl--in other words, the stereotypical ancestral feminist. Her cousin Patience, on the other hand, is a the stereotypical jealous harpy intent on keeping Martha--her cousin--in her inferior place. The lead baddie, Bloodlow, is crueller than cruel and meaner than mean. The Welshman, Thomas, is the strong, silent type, taller than tall, stronger than strong, silenter than silent (at least until he falls in love--then it seems he can't stop blabbing his secrets). Well, you get the picture. These are all folks I've seen before in numerous historical novels, and that familiarity makes the plot, overall, too predictable. Who wants to read a novel with so few surprises? Near the end, Kent sticks in the gratuitous but expected scene of first lovemaking (ho hum!). I could have done without the graphic description of a ruptured hymen, about which which she attempted to wax poetically.

Maybe it's just me . . . maybe I needed an even longer break from historical fiction. The Wolves of Andover is certainly not a bad book, but what disappointed me most was that it had the potential to be so much better.

Troubled by a not very good narrator

A decent piece of historical fiction, but terribly marred by a poor performance by the narrator. She seemed to be be constantly in a rush, reading the entire book as if it were one paragraph. It was breathless! It sometimes took me a sentence or two to realize we had switched locales or characters. She also had a very set cadence and read every sentence as if it had equal weight and meaning. I suggest the print version.

Just didn't hold my attention.

What disappointed you about The Traitor's Wife?

I didn't listen to the end of the story. It was long and wordy.

Members Reviews:

Sequel to My Heart Remembers

For the most part I enjoyed this book up until the near end. Close to end, I thought the book was way to mushy. Also left a couple of unanswered questions. The narrator at times was annoying in my opinion.

Terrible, irritating narration

Julia Gibson, as narrator, has a terrible habit of pushing out the last word of almost every sentence with an airy gush and elongating each of those last words. The intonation in dialogue is quite unnaturally affected. The story would have been good if it weren't so irritating to listen to it.

Warning

Well written and entertaining. Something to listen to while at the gym.

But there is no mention in the audible listing that this book is of a religious genre, specifically Christian, with a lot of references to church and "morality", with a lot of ideology and censorship thrown in.

I would have appreciated some advance warning.

ONLY REASON FOR NOT GIVING 5 STARS

I do so appreciate this author and her clean and meaningful stories. I usually give 5 stars, but in this case I had one concern with the narrator and one with the author. It may sound trite, but the author chooses to allow the main female character to continue calling the main male character by his childhood name of Petey even when he has become a man and has asked not to be called Petey but to be called Pete. The female character simply says that "you'll always be Petey to me", insinuating that what I want to call you is far more important than what you want to be called. As I relate to my own family, we have had many family members who wanted to be called a more grown-up name as they got older. For instance, Danny wanted to be Dan. Abie wanted to be Abe. Donnie wanted to be Don. But yet when one female member of the family wanted to drop the ey off of her name, several family members balked and refused to do so continuing to call her a name that she had asked not to be called clear into their late adulthood. I know the pain and hurt that that caused, and I'm surprised that the author let that go clear to the end of the book. The concern I had with the narrator is that one of the main characters from book had been a tomboy type; bullheaded, stubborn personality who did settle down and calm somewhat but of course would never be a prim and prissy almost uppity type person. However, the narrator uses for the same character in this book a prim and prissy almost snooty type of voice which just does not fit with a character that has already been established for her. I'm wondering if the narrator did not read the previous book narrated by someone else, or did not get any coaching on what the personality of this particular character already established, was.

Title: C

Author: Tom McCarthy

Narrator: Stephen Hoye

Format: Unabridged

Length: 14 hrs and 2 mins

Language: English

Release date: 09-07-10

Publisher: Tantor Audio

Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 59 votes

Genres: Fiction, Historical

Publisher's Summary:

Serge Carrefax spends his childhood at Versoie House, where his father teaches deaf children to speak when he's not experimenting with wireless telegraphy. Sophie, Serge's sister and only connection to the world at large, takes outrageous liberties with Serge's young body - which may explain the unusual sexual predilections that haunt him for the rest of his life. After recuperating from a mysterious illness at a Bohemian spa, Serge serves in World War I as a radio operator. C culminates in a bizarre scene in an Egyptian catacomb where all Serge's paths and relationships at last converge.

Tom McCarthy's mesmerizing, often hilarious accomplishment effortlessly blends the generational breadth of Ian McEwan with the postmodern wit of Thomas Pynchon and marks a writer rapidly becoming one of the most significant and original voices of his generation.

Critic Reviews:

"Each chapter of McCarthy's tour de force is a cryptic, ornate puzzle box, rich with correspondences and emphatically detailed digressions. Ambitious readers will be eager to revisit this endlessly interpretive world, while more casual readers will marvel at the high-flying picaresque perched at the crossroads of science and the stuff dreams are made of." (Publishers Weekly)

Members Reviews:

Delightful, then just odd and interesting

The first three quarters of this book were a great read. I loved the characters, the setting, the prose and the storyline. The writing is sharp and witty. The reader's performance was one of the best I've ever heard and I found myself laughing out loud frequently. But the book takes a sharp turn about 3/4s of the way in and after that, I lost interest. I got the impression that the author was looking at his watch and trying to figure out how he could make the story end on a much grander note than the book's more natural trajectory.

English majors can write long papers on the symbolism and hidden meanings in this book. I just feel frustrated by the story's collapse.

The anti-novel ruined by the narration

One of the book reviews I saw on this book characterized it as an anti-novel. At first I didn't really know what that means. But that was made clear soon enough in this case it is a novel without a plot.

Now, books without a plot is not necessary a bad things. Many books follow this path quite successfully. What this book lacks in plot is more than made up by the writing itself. The writing, at times, is actually quite beautiful.

But my biggest problem with this book is the narration. The narrator is so lethergic is the narration that I had trouble staying awake while listening to it. He just drone on and on. With no plot to grab one's attention, his droning makes for a lethal combination.

Granted, the author has no control over the narration. So if we had a more engaging reader, this would be a 3-4 star book. Alas.. a perfectly good anti-novel ruined by the narration :-(

Story and protagonist failed to engage

What does Serge want? What are his feelings about his mother and father? Why did his sister commit suicide? I get we're supposed to read between the lines and I failed because I have no clue to the answers. Even more relevant, though, I didn't care. I never once lost myself in the narrative. I was always aware I was listening to a book and kept looking at how much time was left.

Title: The Tontine

Author: Thomas B. Costain

Narrator: David Case

Format: Unabridged

Length: 41 hrs and 1 min

Language: English

Release date: 08-24-10

Publisher: Random House Audio

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 47 votes

Genres: Fiction, Historical

Publisher's Summary:

Tontine is a form of gambling - part lottery, part insurance. It begins with the Day the Battle of Waterloo was fought and ends at the closing of the 19th century.

The drama touches royalty and millionaires, actresses and sailors, planters and portrait painters. It ranges from London to the Caribbean, driven by a world in high gear, a world powered by greed.

But time flies by. Three survivors wait each other out. Then two, and at last, only one. . .a winner with everything but a future.

Members Reviews:

Sprawls Over Most of a Century

Any additional comments?

This is a good book if you like really long novels which encompass [in this case] two families over most of a century. It begins just as the Battle of Waterloo is underway, and ends shortly before the 20th century. Large cast of characters -- sometimes a little hard to remember who is who. Costain is a competent writer, but I must admit that David Case is not one of my favorite readers, although he is somewhat better than usual with this book [the only other book I think he did really well was Margaret George's "Autobiography of Henry VIII"]. He can do accents, but his normal reading voice has a supercilious drawl to it.

Inevitably, the main characters age, and so there is more emphasis on them in their later years -- the whole plot revolves around who will survive the longest and win the "tontine", a form of gamble where the oldest survivor will get the most money out of the scheme. This means considerable dialogue where voices are quavering [and even rambling].

Definitely a "big read".

TheTontine

This was an excellent read. It started off a little slow but later held my attention completely. The concept of the stock market is way before its time. I loved the way the author took us through several generations. It was a great book. The brilliant business strategies reminded me a little of the Barbara Taylor Bradley Ravenscar family series; The Heir, etc.

A Winning Ticket!

Enjoying long and detail rich novels, The Tontine was a wonder filled surprise. Dickensian in it's wealth of quirky characters, that move through the early industrial and Empire building revolutions of Britain, a Tontine, or Lottery of immense size, allows us to follow these ticket holders through three generations. Only one person can receive the great sum of the winning ticket from the accumulated interest of decades, that being the last person alive in the Tontine.

The growth of industry following the Napoleonic Wars and the expansion of the Empire, through to the social nightmare of great poverty and child labour in Victoria's reign, opens out to a full range of possibilities for the bold and weak inhabitants of 18th century England, in Thomas B.
