A Robust Tale of Getting Even

Clearly, author Hight did his home work and knows his way pretty well around in 14th century Italy. It's also clear readers should do theirs, too; for with all the ferocity, mayhem and medieval intrigue going on, it's worth paying attention. But start off by thumb-checking the Dramatis Personae (cast of characters) and Glossary, the better to know who is doing what to whom, and why.

Get squared away with the style and lingo, and you're in for one heckuva read. Better yet, there's even more on tap.

Quality Middle Ages historical fiction that will keep you on your toes

If you love Medieval Italy and all its intrigue, this book is a must-read. It's obvious the author extensively researched while writing; this is a well fleshed-out story rich with details and accurate historical references. If you've studied the period and/or traveled the country, you'll delight over and over again in recognizing names and places (as I did). I was enthralled in reading the stories of these Medieval warriors, and recognized the subtle influences of the author's own service in the writing. This is the writing of an author with real "street cred," and it shows. I can't wait for his next publication.

What a page turner! The book wasted no time calling the Squires to action and does not stop until the end. Excellent historical novel, vivid characters, and graphic descriptions that put you in medieval Italy. I especially enjoyed the scenes where he weaved his culinary knowledge into the period foods. The past isn't past

"Dogs at the Perimeter" starts in a challenging way for the reader and it takes some time to sort who's who. However, the disorientation is relatively short lived and as you discover, very much intentional. Madeleine Thien takes you from an ordered Canadian setting back through time and memory to the chaos and suffering of Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge. Her account of the detention camps, the interrogations and the mass killings is overwhelming. Presented through the eyes of a child, life in these brutal times is reported without emotion, but with greater impact as a result. If Thein herself didn't experience this, she knows a lot of people who did and her tale is a wonderful tribute to ordinary people caught up in the horror. It is also a tribute to the survivors and the excruciating psychological burden they carry throughout their otherwise "normal" lifes. A mighty, memorable book.

This was a surprising, twisting, intriguing read!

First, if you are thinking this is the typical historic romance you would be disappointed. This story is closer to a historical fiction with love, intrigue, death, anguish...a great tale. As the story weaves you into its tale, you are there, living it with the characters. I agree with some others, don't give up reading it, it is a very worthy story and you will be grabbed into the words.

Immeasurably entertaining and interesting read!

At first, I was quite put off with the amount of typographical errors and incorrect grammatical usage- so happy that I persevered because this book is truly extraordinary. The story line is quite unique and the attention to historically relevant information makes the reader feel as though they stepped upon a magical carpet, whisked back in time. Admirably devious and calculating female characters- and I thought that this would be a great movie as well. About halfway through the book, errors become less, and I had a great time reading this book.

GREAT read, can't wait to see more from this author!

I am rarely called upon to write a review, because most of the books I read have been thoroughly reviewed by so many people that there's nothing new I could add. However, this book has an egregious lack of comments, and I have to do my part to rectify that.

I have read a LOT of history and historical fiction, most of it based in this general time period. I'm constantly searching for new books in this genre that are well-written and engrossing. I want to read a slice-of-life wherein the characters aren't given modern-day sensibilities (I'm just about as feminist as they come, but an independent woman in 12th century France is laughably unbelievable). A romantic interest is acceptable, as long as it doesn't overpower the story. More than anything, I want to feel as if I am a part of the story, as if I am actually in the time period that's being written.

If the above description of ME sounds like YOU, then you owe it to yourself to read this book. Not only does this book fit my requirements as outlined above, it is the perfect combination: a relatively simple storyline told with beautifully complex language. The characters are believable, the history is accurate (at least as far as I know) and the ending is satisfying.

In case you're wondering, Ms. Lortz's style reminds me of Sharon Kay Penman - it's not an "easy read" but frankly, I don't WANT one. I really appreciate that the language was not "dumbed down" to appeal to a wider audience. I want to read more by Ms. Lortz, and I want to read it NOW. :) Please, keep writing!!!

Reminds me of a Thomas B. Costain novel...in a good way

This book is marketed as historical fiction that is similar to more recent books such as Phillipa Gregory or Elizabeth Chadwick's novels. But that is a misrepresentation that ill-serves this novel. Those authors usually put as their focus the relationships of their protagonists, and their active involvement in shaping their lives in times of the past.

This book would more accurately be described as a story of the personal evolution of Sir Potenhale.

Darker but still entertaining

This is the 4th in the Rowland Sinclair series of adventure mysteries set in 1930s Australia although the background here is an increasingly repressive 3rd Reich Munich. In many ways this mystery is dominated by our knowledge of what was to come in Germany - something the protagonists don't know. This is particularly true of the backstory of Eva the young German shop assistant the group befriend. We know who she is and her ultimate fate - knowledge Rowly and his friends are denied.

Rowland and his friends prove able and inventive in the tactics they use to achieve their task in Germany and they meet and make interesting friends. Although this is in some ways much grimmer than previous books in this series there is still a humour and irreverence which threads through these stories. Parts of this story were truly disturbing and the Australians reactions to the German repressions was well conveyed.

Perhaps as another reviewer has noted the mystery was more obvious than others have been but this book touched me more deeply than the previous books. I truly felt the fear and horror and appreciated the courage of those who resisted. As Senator Hardy says when he shakes Milton's hand, "Desperate times, strange bedfellows". This was a worthy contribution to this fine series.

Loved it.

This is a writer that I will keep reading until I have finished the whole series. Luckily there are plenty of books to read.

A great read.

Paving the New Road iss another great read from Sulari Gentill. Rowland Sinclair and his friends travel to Germany as Hitler is rising to power.The historical research was obviously extensive and the author manages to evoke the time and place beautifully. However it wasn't the strongest of the novels to date with the mystery being fairly obvious and the characters seeming a little secondary to the scenery.

This is a great series of books but at this point I think the author needs to think about the direction of the characters and perhaps not use so many historical figures in her books. The characters of Rowly and his friends and family are terrific and they need to take centre stage again and be developed. I just get the feeling that aspects of this novel were a bit rushed.

Still an entertaining read by a great author and I'm already waiting for the next one.

Book 4, The stakes go up as Rowland travels to Germany

Rowland is maneuvered into traveling to Germany as a spy for the Old Guard. Extreme danger follows as he steers between Nazis, spies, news reporters, communists, artists and radicals in general. His loyal friends go with him, and their support brings him home in almost one piece.

The atmosphere in Germany is ominous, and the book gives a look into the anxiety of this period. Very well researched and written. Might as well get the entire series, you'll want to keep reading.

Wonderful fresh telling

Very interesting to to have Anne approached in a way that contrasts the many other novels of her life.

Alison Weir has long been my favourite author of historical fiction, and I have enjoyed the first two books in the 6 wives series almost as much as innocent traitor, which I still believe to be her finest work.

I enjoyed the performance of Anna Bentinck, but the version I listened to needs editing, there are several mistakes and even a double take of the same initially mispronounced sentence.

Intense

Fantastic book, even better than the first. The ending made me cry. Looking forward to the next instalment!!

Better than the first book!

Took almost 2 books to develop some of the characters. Writing got better in this second book on the events following the Russian counter offensive north and south of Stalingrad in late 1942. The first book was almost difficult to read. I'll buy the third book shortly, just to see what happens to the main characters.

Excellent so far!

There is no glory in war.

Real war from a soldiers perspective. These men were not Nazis, just German regulars fighting for survival in a place where no prisoners were taken. Our Russian allies were capable of extreme atrocities, not only against the hated Germans but civilians as well as their own men. A gripping and enlightening read.

Such a unique time travel book!

It took me a while to get into this book! The lights were a bit mystical and since I wasn't familiar with the author I wasn't sure if it would turn out to be a book I would enjoy or a book that was filled with Unorthodox spiritual themes. I'm glad I got back to it! It was a good book that finally pulled me in. It seemed to hop around a bit in topic but turns out it's just book one so hopefully there will be some closure in book two!

Reagan did a wonderful job narrating! Her soft spoken Southern accent was perfect for the Brown Mountains. She did several different characters from an old slave man to a compassionate slave owners son, then a sweet old Indian woman to a young grumpy Constable. The main characters were four young women and their voices were different enough to make conversations easy to figure out who was talking! She even hummed a few notes! Truly a superb performance!

I'm looking forward to book 2 so I can figure out what happened next!!

Excellent Story

I normally don't like stories told in first person, especially when the main character is female. Therefore, I had a little trouble staying interested at first. However, due to the great story & awesome narration, I soon found myself hanging on every word. It probably also helped that while I love learning history, I have never had any patience with boring school books & have always preferred to learn history by reading novels. I can't wait for the sequel!!!

This book is truly entertaining . Look for the series. The narrator did a wonderful job. She told the story has if it was happening to her.And each character, was unique in their own way.

The story is so well written with great details and the narration is incredibly engaging. The multiple variations in the characters voices is phenomenal, I knew instantly who's speaking.
