Getting Ready: Jesus is Coming Back
Jesus left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to him to call his attention to itsbuildings. 2 “Do you see all these things?” he asked. “Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.” 3 As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” 4 Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. 5 For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many. 6 You will hear of wars andrumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 7 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines andearthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of birth pains.
Matt 24:1-82 questions Jesus disciples ask from Verse 3
They’re asking about the fall ofJerusalem.
They’re asking about the return ofChrist.
Here’s what we know:
Vs. 8-Going to be birth pains.
Vs. 26-No one knows day or hour.
Vs. 42-Keep watch (get ready).
Vs. 44-Be ready
“But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only theFather. 37 As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 42 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. 43 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.
Matthew 24:36-37,42-44
Central message of Eschatology:
Watch and be ready!
3 Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following theirown evil desires. 4 They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our ancestors died,everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.” 5 But they deliberately forget that long agoby God’s word the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water. 6 By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. 7 By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly. 2 PETER 33:3-7
8 But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day 9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. 10But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.[a] 11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holyand godly lives. 2 PETER 33: 8-11
The point of being ready:
Live Godly and Holy lives
Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wroteyou with the wisdom that God gave him. 2 Peter 33:15
