Fun, dark book explores dating at middle age
Fun, dark book explores dating at middle age. I absolutely love these characters - they are complex, different from any other books I have read. Angel was a predator for years, due to a horrific experience she has been forced to live a different life. Thanks to her friends she finally met her match, and what a match he is. It is a quick to the point read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Kudos to Nya for such a daring story.
Sinew and bone of an angel
DANCE MACABRE
An author's first work is supposed to be a little gangly, elbows and knees showing and prose uncertain as a young girl trying out her mother's stillettos.
Not Nya Rawlyns. Not this book.
Oh, the book has its thin spots, this story of a 40-something, past-her-prime former body builder and mob enforcer for Miami's sleazy night streets who is looking without looking for a healer. The story is perhaps a little too short, the peripheral characters maybe a little too stamped-in-a-mold, to fully satisfy.
But look at the sinew and the bone, not at the weaker flesh.
The woman Angel, in a tour de force, meets her devil, the blind date who takes her to his plush home and binds her to him for once and forever. The dance is indeed macabre, but I did not question the inexorable attraction between these two. It had to be. The past pain, the jagged scars on her face and body--it all had to be healed somehow. And who better to heal an stricken angel than one who knows pain, understands it, and helps her overcome it?
Rawlyns has a sure, brazen and in-your-grill style that deliberately grates and wounds, like fingernails scraping against, then sinking into a soft throat. But underneath the flippancy of tone and the angry words that spit and hiss--ah, underneath lies the heart and soul of a poet. A voice I want to remember.
For its forgiveable lapses, I give it a four. For its full-throated cri de coeur, I give it a five. Does Amazon accept a score in-between, a 4.5? If so, that is my score. If not . . . I'll settle at four and read Nya's stories from now on, having found a sure, unfettered poet.
I rate this book, which I purchased, four point five out of five stars.
Dark, disturbing and totally unique
I've done a fair amount of reading in my day, and that includes just about every genre that's out there. Ok, no Mills & Boon, but I've been around. That said, I've rarely read a story as unique and genre-breaking as this one. But that would be uninteresting if it wasn't as excellently written and superbly crafted as this story is.
From the opening sentence to the final scene, suspension of disbelief is total, which is especially impressive considering the outré subject matter. This is adult material and occasionally rather hard core - make no mistake about that.
