Good Summer Read

Comfort Food is a light summer "read" that was enjoyable to listen to. I would have liked a little more character development of the daughters. They had the potential to be interesting characters to use as spin-off stories in the future.

What a dumb story!

This book is nothing short of stupid. I have long considered my words, wanting to be precise in my criticism in respect to the responsibility of a negative review. I cant say this book is horrible, that would imply all components were failures, they were not. There was a thorough story line and a considered plot, it was just extremely dull. The characters were conceivable but were presented in such an unbecoming manner, at times even cringe-worthy. In all, it was just a stupid, boring story unworthy of the caliber of The Knitting Club trio. Someone had warned me it wasnt as good as the trio, which I really enjoyed, but I never imagined it would be so dumb.

Just makes you want to cook for your friends

All of them..........they all worked so well together and I was able to follow the story. It was worth the listen.

Would be stronger as a novella

Would you try another book from Anita Brookner and/or Stephen Thorne?

I have read Brookner before and like her. I was looking forward to another blend of erudite description and wry insights. That is indeed here, but along with too much filler and repeat.

Would you recommend The Next Big Thing to your friends? Why or why not?

No. There are great sections of this book that I'd certainly share. But I cannot recommend the entire book.

What about Stephen Thorne???s performance did you like?

Fine performance, but brooske for brusque was comical.

Could you see The Next Big Thing being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

thoughful and moving

a sensitively told tale of older man and the loneliness of later life spent on one's own. well told and moving. not the most cheerful of stories but a salutory lesson in the importance keeping up one's contacts and being thoughtful of older people who spend too much time alone. we're not exploting this source of experience properly.

Mostly entertaining

I like this author but I didn't think it was her best. Once I got quite a ways into the book I mostly enjoyed it. I thought it dragged in the beginning and I was tired of the smoking and drinking and bad choices people made. But, after a while the characters started to grow on me and I wanted to see what would happen. If I could have given a 3.5, I would have.

Lack of Communication makes Resolution Difficult

Would you listen to Searching for Paradise in Parker, PA again? Why?

I was glad that Ms Radish did not make this all cute, and soft. It was frustrating, sad, and happy just like life. I love her books and each for a different reason. This is not like all the others, her characters are stuggling to find their way through life and questioning their furtures.

This was my first Barbara McCulloh listen

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I listened to this while driving from Montana to Wyoming. I wanted to yell at both the wife and the husband for not being better communicators. They reminded me of many people I have met or known over the years.

Pathetic.... almost painful

I hae truly enjoyed Kris Radish's books over the years. Stories of strong women becoming empowered and finding their paths. But this one was just a waste of time. It was almost painful to read, and I found myself drifing off and away from the story.

Addy Lipton, the somewhat protagonist, is shakled to her husband Lucky, for whom the many years of marriage have anesthesized him into a lackluster existance governed by his overflowing garage, the Kingdom of Krap.

There is, of course, the straw that breaks Lucky's back and the couple retreat to their own worlds. The ending is very unsatisfactory, and if I had been Addy, I would have kicked Lucky to the curb long before this story ended. Radish needs to stick to stories of women.... let the guys fnd their own entertainment.

A total waste of time.

Great story and not what you expect.

I really enjoyed how this story progressed and how it was not what I first expected.

Epic story

After a heart-stopping first chapter the book slows its pace and gradually builds up a picture of the main characters and their lives. There's perhaps a little too much about smoke-jumping in the middle of the book, but after that the story takes off and one feels by the end that one has been witness to an epic story.

Wonderful!

Nicholas Evans is one of my favourite writers and this is probably my favourite Evans novel. Pure poetry. The narrator is wonderful.

Guy's Bood

I am 55 years old, a professional, and I am happy to tell you that I loved this book. But I liked American Pie (though I didn't think it was right that they put the Czechoslovakia girl on the net) and other idiotic, immature, and lowbrow stuff too. It is for a person who can let themselves go back to age 13 and re-experience the mindset and erection set. I wonder, maybe my mindset hasn't changed in 42 years and I am not going back.

Love the book, hated the reading

This is one of my favorite books of all time, and I had the idea that maybe revisiting it in casual audiobook fashion would be a great way to reconnect with the piece...WRONG.

Paul Michael Garcia (the voice) sounds like a Computer reading words one at a time, over annunciating the wrong points and rolling words like he is in a bad Shakespeare in the park play...

This story is ALL Nick Twisp... and it was necessary to find a person who embodied this confused, vulnerable and evolving character. This readers speak and spell reading style is not the correct casting.

As they put Michael Ceras face on the cover, shouldn't they have had him read this? While the narrator did a good job, I wonder if the punch lines would have hit better if Cera read this as he had played Nick Twisp.

I was greatly disappointed in how I didn't find this as humorous as the movie adaptation of the book. There are no plans for me to read the other books in this series.

If you have not seen the movie, I suggest you do so, but only AFTER reading the book. It has always been common for me to enjoy a movie and then research if there was a book (not a novelization) available for me. Once Ive read the book, Ill sometimes go back and mentally fill in the story gaps. But that is mostly due to the book being so much more than the movie ever could be. In this case, I dont suggest reading the book after seeing the movie. You might be as disappointed as I am.

Very Different

I loved the movie and the book while good has been changed a great deal. Nevertheless, I still enjoyed it but not quite as much as I enjoyed the movie, which in my opinion was better thought out.

Those looking for the more lighthearted writing of McCall Smith (Mma Ramotswe series, et al) might be surprised by the relatively dark tone of these short stories. Note, they're also frankly sexual in tone, usually dealing with failures and unhappiness, with a few exceptions.

Norwood: an amusing, rambling road odyssey

While not for all tastes, "Norwood" is Charles Portis' first novel and one that displays the author's fondness for wry observational humor and quirky characters. Norwood Pratt accepts a job to drive a car cross-country for a shady businessman, all in the hopes of collecting $70 from a friend in New York City. The real joy of this tale lies in watching Norwood's interactions with the strange, colorful people that he meets along the way, and how the hero's unwavering simple worldview gets him into and out of trouble. My favorite encounter? It's a toss-up between the flying sausage patty aimed at Bill Bird and the bus ride of Joanne the Wonder Hen.

This is a story where the details are much more rewarding than the plot itself. Narrator Barrett Whitener does a great job bringing the book and its characters to Tex-Arkana life, and the audiobook was perfect to listen to on a recent road trip of my own.

Brilliant, but not for everyone

This book is brilliant on so many levels and no doubt gets better and funnier with subsequent listens. Characters are simultaneously bizarre and humdrum, yet so real. The dialogue is rich and flawless and the narrator was perfect. While the books plot is shallow there arent many twists and turns or high adventure there is tremendous depth just under the surface.

Having said all that, I prefer non-fiction so I probably wont listen to this one again.
