A very clever book
No spoilers..
This is a clever book written by an author who has proved over a long line of historical novels, her depth of knowledge of British medieval and renaissance history and her skill in bringing it to life.
The real and imagined charachters are strong and reflect the history we have come to know as faithfully and as detailled as often seldom found. The action is taught and like all Gable books, when you get into the plot you are again trapped in it.
The real shame is that you have to be a German speaker to enter this world and enjoy the excellent depications of the period, displayed in such a manner that puts most British historical authors fully in the shade
No one brings history more to life than Rebecca Gablé
Rebecca Gablé is a German author with history degrees on the medieval in Britain, therefore all her books are very authentic and full of excellently researched details.
More important, she is an outstandingly vivid storyteller and has the gift to bring both history and her characters (both of which she masterly intertwines) alive.
"Der dunkle Thron" is the forth book of the "Waringham"-series, which is a MUST-READ! Wonderful - love all of them! Reading a book of hers is an absolute treat!
A German-language Gem
It's always struck me as a bizarre irony that the very best historical novels about the English middle ages are written by a German. And it strikes me as a great tragedy that no one is publishing translations of these wonderful books. Der dunkle Thron is the latest book in a series of excellent books set in the English middle ages and Renaissance. They follow the adventurous lives of members of the House of Waringham, an invented aristocratic family, as they struggle through the calamitous events of the time - the Black Death, the Hundred Years War, and the dynastic conflicts culminating in the Wars of the Roses. This book is Ms. Gablé's first departure from her beloved middle ages, in which she follows the fate of the House of Waringham into the heart of the Tudor dynasty. Just as painstakingly researched and captivatingly written as her previous novels, Ms. Gablé continues to cleverly insert her fictional heroes into the blank spots in the canvas of history, as she puts it. This allows them to rub shoulder to shoulder with some of the greatest names of the past and gives her readers a fascinating front-row seat from which to watch some of the events which helped shape the course of Western history. But this book is more than just a history lesson. Both the fictional and historical characters are written with such care and depth that their joys and sorrows feel intimately real, and the reader comes to care passionately what happens to them (even if, in the case of historical figures, they already know). You'll never look at Henry VIII quite the same way again after reading this take on his reign!
Caveat emptor: This text is not suited from anyone who is not extremely fluent in German. Mere students of the language will likely become quickly frustrated by the complexity of both the vocabulary and the grammar.
