Nel 1967 un uomo ha firmato un contratto per non morire. È ancora lì, in un contenitore di azoto liquido in California. A testa in giù. Si chiamava James Bedford, era professore di psicologia, e fu il primo essere umano crioconservato della storia. Da allora sono passati quasi sessant'anni, e più di cinquecento persone hanno fatto la sua stessa scelta — tra cui Robert Ettinger, il fisico del Michigan che aveva inventato tutto questo, insieme a sua madre e alle sue due mogli. Tutti nello stesso capannone. Tutti in attesa. In questo episodio parliamo di crionica: cos'è, come funziona, perché non funziona ancora, e soprattutto perché la domanda interessante non è "funzionerà mai?" ma un'altra, più scomoda: anche se funzionasse, cosa stiamo davvero chiedendo? E a chi? Parliamo di lutto, di identità, di giustizia. E di Bezos, Thiel, Ellison e compagnia, che stanno cercando di risolvere lo stesso problema con più soldi e un ufficio a Palo Alto.
