When I was young, my mother gave me one warning I never forgot:

BE HOME BEFORE DARK.

She told me that after sunset, mysterious Forest Fairies came out — supernatural beings that, according to her, rode on the backs of wolves.

But what she told me could happen if they found someone outside after dark was considerably more frightening than the version I'm sharing today.

Now that I am an Elder myself, I believe these stories and warnings are worth preserving and passing on.

When I was a young boy growing up in Bella Bella on the Central Coast of British Columbia, my mother gave me a warning I never forgot.

She warned me about an enormous flying creature — something much larger than an eagle — that could come from the sky and carry a person away.

Now, as a Heiltsuk Elder, I look back at that warning and ask a question I could never have imagined asking as a child:

What exactly were our Elders describing?

Was it simply an exceptionally large bird? A creature behind stories sometimes associated with the Thunderbird? Or could descriptions of giant flying cryptids have some connection to prehistoric flying reptiles such as pterosaurs and the commonly used term “pterodactyl”?

This episode is my personal account of the warning passed down to me and the questions it raises today. I am not claiming that an extinct animal survives today. I am preserving the story as it was told to me and allowing listeners to decide what they think it meant.

In Episode 3 of Warnings Our Elders Gave Us, I share a warning passed down to me by my Heiltsuk aunt, one she believed could protect our family.

She warned me never to leave personal things behind: strands of hair, cigarette butts, or anything closely connected to you. She believed there were people who practiced dark magic and could use these items to work harmful spells against others.

She also warned me to keep my doors locked and to be careful who I trusted.

Do I know whether these things were true? No. I can only share what my aunt believed and the warnings she cared enough to pass down to me.

Whether you see her warning as a spiritual teaching, an old belief, or simply a lesson about protecting yourself and being careful who you trust, it stayed with me throughout my life.

These are the stories and teachings our elders left with us. By sharing them, we help preserve them for future generations.

In the forests of the Pacific Northwest, my father gave me a warning I never forgot: if you encounter strange beings in the woods, do not follow them.

In this episode of Ghost Boat Adventures, I share a First Nations story passed down through my family about mysterious beings seen deep in the forest. Were they spirits, something physical, visitors from somewhere else, or something we still do not understand?

My father was a commercial fisherman and a man who knew the land and waters. His warning was simple. These beings could call to you, draw you farther into the forest, and if you followed them, you might never find your way back.

I cannot tell you exactly what they were. I can only tell you what my father told me and why I have remembered his warning all these years.
