  • Ep 110 - Austin Stirling | The Other Side of Tragedy
Talented musician Austin Stirling shares his life story with us and how sometimes the other side of tragedy can be a good thing. His music style is perhaps best described as Dark Folk that goes straight to your soul. We featured some of this music from the new album in the podcast. They are in order of appearance:
    "War Drums"
    "From The Dirt"
    "With The Wolves"
Austin's music mixes up a serious mesh of influences from Blues, Country, the sweaty vibes of Rockabilly, and Saturday evening mischief before Sunday morning reflection. His music stretches through dozens of styles, but always comes out sounding like his own badass reflection. He holds tightly the reins of the music until it's time to break free like wild bulls, allowing his recordings the opportunity to discover the brilliant energy that is his live show.

  • Ep 106 - Zelia Edgar | Paranormal Connections
We had a fantastic talk with paranormal researcher Zelia Edgar on making connections between the different fields in the paranormal: Hauntings, UFOs and Cryptozoology. So often they are looked at separately but when connections start to get made, the lines between the different fields start to blur.
Zelia Edgar has had a lifelong interest in the paranormal and has been seriously studying it for over a decade.  In that time, she has worked as a field investigator and state director for Wisconsin MUFON, and recently stepped down from that position to focus more time on her own research which has been heavily influenced by John Keel, Jacques Vallee and Ivan Sanderson.  Cases that transcend the boundaries of seemingly different types of phenomena are of special interest to her such as the Mothman, Enfield Horror and the Simonton Encounter. She runs the YouTube channel JustAnotherTinFoilHat, and has a podcast on the Paranormal UK Radio Network by that same name.  In addition to researching the paranormal, she writes weird horror and cosmic fiction.

  • Ep 105 - James Nestor | Freediving and the Language of Whales
Author, journalist, and adventurer James Nestor joins us to talk about the amazing ability of humans to freedive. Most are shocked to learn this is even something humans are capable of. Through his research and interest in freediving, James learned how freediving is allowing the closer study of sperm whales and how they communicate which is seriously fascinating. Could we be capable of cracking the communication code of the largest mammal on the planet and proving humans are not the only ones with advanced intelligence and speech? We spend millions searching for intelligent life in the cosmos when it could very well be on our own planet, existing just below us.
    -----
James Nestor is a San Francisco-based journalist who has written for Outside magazine, Men’s Journal, Scientific American, Dwell magazine, National Public Radio, The New York Times, The Atlantic, the San Francisco Chronicle magazine, and others.
His science/adventure book, “DEEP: Freediving, Renegade Science, and What the Ocean Tells Us about Ourselves” was released in 2014 and was an Amazon Best Science Book of 2014, BBC Book of the Week, BuzzFeed 19 Best Nonfiction Book of 2014, New York Times Book Review Editor’s Choice. In 2015, the PEN American Center awarded “DEEP” as one of the five best books of Literary Sports Writing.
On April 18, 2016, The New York Times and Within released “The Click Effect,” a Virtual Reality experience about the efforts of two freelance freediving researchers trying to decode the secret language of dolphins and whales. Nestor wrote “The Click Effect” and shared co-creator credits with director Sandy Smolan. “The Click Effect” was produced by The New York Times, The Sundance Institute, and The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and was an official selection of Sundance Film Festival, Tribeca Film Festival, Seattle Film Festival, and more. As of December 2016, “The Click Effect” has been downloaded more than one million times.
Nestor’s new book, “Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art” will be released through Riverhead/Penguin Random House on May 26, 2020. It explores how the human species has lost the ability to breathe properly over the past several hundred thousand years and is now suffering from a laundry list of maladies — snoring, sleep apnea, asthma, autoimmune disease – because of it.
Nestor travels the world to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. The answers aren’t found in pulmonology labs, as we might expect, but in the muddy digs of ancient burial sites, secret Soviet facilities, New Jersey choir schools, and the smoggy streets of Sao Paulo. Drawing on thousands of years of medical texts and recent cutting-edge studies in pulmonology, psychology, biochemistry, and human physiology, Breath turns the conventional wisdom of what we thought we knew about our most basic biological function on its head.
