The concept of “give and take” is generally widely accepted in Japanese society. I believe it is hypocritical to ask for something in return for doing something kind to another person. However, if you fail to reciprocate a kindness, you may be considered ungrateful, and in some cases, you may be sanctioned. This is something to keep in mind when working for a Japanese company.
