"One day, when I was a freshman in high school, I saw a kid from my class walking home from school. His name was Kyle. It looked like he was carrying all of his books. I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday? He must really be a nerd." I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on. As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him. They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt. His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him. He looked up, and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes. My heart went out to him. So I jogged over to him, and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, I saw a tear in his eye. As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks. They really should get lives." He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!" There was a big smile on his face. It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude. I helped him pick up his books and asked him where he lived. As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before. He said he had gone to private school before now. I would have never hung out with a private school kid before, but we talked all the way home, and I carried his books. He turned out to be a pretty cool kid. I asked him if he wanted to play football on Saturday with me and my friends. He said yes..."

"Dear diary,

I woke up cranky today! I hadn't slept well, and I didn't want to get out of bed. I tossed over to the other side and covered my head with my fleece blanket. I was just drifting off to sleep when the rude sound of my 12-year-old brother running down the hallway and calling my mum, startled me – seriously, I could strangle that boy!

Frustrated and annoyed I jumped out of bed and reluctantly got ready for the day. My best friend Angela was still on holidays with her family and wouldn't come till the end of the week. I groaned – I missed her. I wish I could wave my finger and Friday would arrive in a blink of an eye...."

"Edward had glanced at the clock in the train station. He was supposed to catch the express train to Jammu and then go from Jammu to Katra. The mission station where he lived and went to school was in the Himalayan mountains of Kashmir, northern India. And now the boy had struck up a conversation, seemingly eager for Edward's company.

The small Indian boy glanced at Edward. His eyes were bright.

"The train will come soon," the boy told Edward once again.

"What's your name?" Edward asked.

The boy seemed surprised that anyone would want to know his name. "Sadu is my name. I come with you, yes?" Sadu asked hopefully.

Edward chuckled. "Wouldn't your family miss you?"

The boy shuffled his feet and looked at the ground. "I have no family," Sadu replied without emotion.

So he's an orphan, Edward thought sadly."

"Seven-year-old Sophie Hayes wiped her swollen red eyes and leaned closer to her father. Her little heart melted with sadness as she looked at the shiny white coffin at the front of the church. Elaborate flower arrangements decorated its surroundings. Her mother lay sleeping in the white box. Sophie hoped she was warm and comfortable. How she wished she could tickle and wake her up, but her father had told her she would sleep until Jesus called her on the resurrection morning. Sophie didn't really understand what it meant, but she knew her mother would not be coming home to tuck her in before bed, play tickles with her or do tea parties. At the thought of going home without her mother, fresh tears cascaded down her cheeks and fell in fat wet blobs on her immaculate velvet black dress. Her body trembled, and she drowned the pastors' words he was saying about her mother, Celeste. Someone reached for her hand and squeezed it tight. She lifted her head slightly and saw her best friend and cousin Giselle with her big hazel eyes filled with tears, too. Relief filled Sophie as she grabbed hold of Giselle's hand in hers. The girls sat next to each other, crying softly and holding hands.

"Unable to go back to sleep. Sophie got a blanket and went to sit on the bay window. Down below was great darkness. The moon was now covered by dark clouds, giving the night an eerie feel. She leaned her head against the cushions and closed her eyes briefly. She didn't understand why God was allowing her to miss her mum so much. The intense feeling slowly subsided, and she relaxed enough to feel her eyes flutter a few times. Taking a quiet deep breath, she got out of the seat to go back to bed. Suddenly, out of the corner of her eye, she saw a shadow walking down the path towards the little back gate. She held her breath and watch intently as the hooded figure hurried its pace. Spellbound, Sophie pressed her face and hands on the glass window and peered down noticing each step the figure took. The angry clouds above moved and light shone below. A slight move of the figure exposed long blond hair under the hood. It glistened and glowed under the light. Sophie's eyes widened, and she covered her mouth with her hand to avoid screaming and waking up Giselle. "Mum!" She whispered. The sudden urge to run after the figure overwhelmed her, but her silent tears and weak legs prevented her from moving. She collapsed on the seat in a heap and sobbed."
