Canny girls, Emma and Kiki, are back in the house to join Yo.
The 3 of us recently went to see the movie, Barbie, together
and wanted to share some of our key takeaways.
When originally thinking about the movie and doing an
episode around it, I wondered if it might be too silly but what really
convinced me to see the movie was hearing the monologue Gloria makes in the movie about it being literally impossible to be a woman which began with:
“You are so beautiful, and so smart, and it kills me
that you don’t think you’re good enough. Like, we have to always be
extraordinary, but somehow we’re always doing it wrong.”
And Gloria continues to outline all the expectations
and I knew I was in. See link below.
“Spoiler Alert”: we will cover some of the plot and
quotes from different scenes. So if you’d rather not know these and are going to go see the movie maybe skip this episode? You can come back to it after you see the movie and we hope you’ll let us know what you think!
And I should also say the three of us were big fans of the movie and if you saw the movie and didn’t like it, we’d love to hear your thoughts. We also understand if you’d rather skip the episode. And if you didn’t like it and still listen to our episode we applaud you and thank you for your empathy and respectful understanding. We clearly see it’s not a film for everyone!
1. All 3 of us were a thumbs up – casting, screenplay, set
design, and production all hit the mark.
2. Probably our favorite Barbie was anxiety ridden depressed Barbie - she comes with sweatpants, eats through a family sized bag of starburst until her jaw hurts and then watches the BBC's pride and prejudice.
3. Barbie had some leadership skills we admired:
communication, partnering, listening with empathy, courageous, problem solving, and strategizing.
As Mentioned in the Episode:
Gloria’s monologue about the impossibility of being a woman.
