Stephanie Rivera, CEO, Lazarex Cancer Foundation, joins Yo to discuss how the Foundation’s efforts to address the gap and barriers in accessing cancer trials for minority populations. This Foundation leads the way to improve cancer health outcomes, FDA cancer clinical trial diversity and enrollment, and patient access to care by providing assistance with clinical trial navigation, reimbursing trial related travel costs, and partnering with at-risk communities to mobilize resources. They are also advocates for changes in policy and laws to support access.

The vision of Lazarex Cancer Foundation is that everyone affected by cancer will have hope, dignity, support and the most advanced treatments made available to them at all stages of their journey.

Stephanie Rivera joined the Lazarex Cancer Foundation as the CEO to continue her commitment to increasing access to health care and clinical trials. In this role, Stephanie brings her long-standing dedication to address health care disparities in underserved communities. In her previous leadership roles with John Muir Health, Public Health Institute, Planned Parenthood, La Clínica de la Raza, San Francisco General Hospital, and University of California, San Francisco, she developed the knowledge to identify health care needs and disparities of the community with the goal of creating positive outcomes.

Stephanie’s advocacy for the community continues with her volunteer services as a board member for Center for Human Development, the Family Justice Center for Contra Costa County, and the Contra Costa County’s Workforce Development Board where she is currently co-chair of the subcommittee on Business and Economic Development.

Stephanie is most proud of her four adult children. She enjoys spending downtime with her partner, family, friends, and her new dog, Lola.

Stephanie holds a Master of Public Health (MPH) from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Bachelor of Science (BS) from the University of California, Davis.

About Yo:

Yo, our podcast Boomer, has been in marketing leadership positions for over 42 years and managed teams of 1 to 14. This Fall she will begin a new phase in her career and begin teaching Consumer Behavior at San José State University in the Marketing and Analytics department within the Lucas School of Business. Her drive to achieve came from her father’s Mexican American roots and growing up in a bi-ethnic family where acceptance was a struggle. She got her MBA in 1978 when few women were in Business Schools and benefited from scholarship and affirmative action programs. She’s led marketing efforts for large companies and start-ups, nonprofits and for-profit, and domestic and global organizations. She has been in a 12 step recovery program over 21 years for eating addiction. Her two daughters are involved in this podcast because she thinks they’re so interesting, intelligent and totally respects their point of view on things. She was been given many opportunities to lead by women who have gone before her and she now wishes to repay that forward by helping all women lead!

Cohn served as Assistant Majority Leader during her time in the Assembly. Cohn was founder and Chair of the committee on Arts, Entertainment, Sports, Tourism and Internet Media. She was the Chair of Health Committee, a member of Public Safety, and the Utilities and Commerce Committees as well. Cohn was instrumental in the development of the state's Medical Examiner competency exam and the establishment of treatment guidelines. She has been active on other boards including: the American Physical Therapy Association's Advisory Panel on Women, the Diversity Task Force of Joint Venture Silicon Valley, the Santa Clara Board of Supervisor's Domestic Violence Council, and the Board of Directors for the Support of Battered Women.

On a personal note, Rebecca lives in Fredericksburg, Texas, with her long-time partner, Peter Schmidt. She is currently designing and building her dream ranch on 34 acres of land which she loves and calls her own.

Before joining JMH she was the inaugural Director of Equity and Wellness at Zuckerberg San Francisco General (ZSFG) and served as Senior Equity and Policy Analyst at the San Francisco Arts Commission where she led the agency’s initiative to pass the first racial equity action plan in the City and County of San Francisco. She is also the co-founder of Creative Equity Research Partners, a consulting company to advance equity in arts and culture.
