In trying to trick Jesus into saying something that the Religious Leaders could use against him, Jesus redirected their question about paying taxes to Rome. What Christ did was draw attention to God the Father's desire to reconcile with humankind. God wants us to give ourselves to Him and that includes our Tithes and offerings. It's the latter that proves we are truly giving ourselves to Him.
