Joshua 15:16–19 (ESV):
“And Caleb said, ‘Whoever strikes Kiriath-sepher and captures it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter as wife.’ And Othniel the son of Kenaz, the brother of Caleb, captured it. And he gave him Achsah his daughter as wife.
When she came to him, she urged him to ask her father for a field. And she dismounted from her donkey, and Caleb said to her, ‘What do you want?’
She said to him, ‘Give me a blessing. Since you have given me the land of the Negeb, give me also springs of water.’
And he gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.”
setting the scene
Caleb is stepping into promise. He’s one of the faithful spies. Years earlier, when everyone else shrank back in fear, Caleb trusted God. And now… after wilderness, after waiting… he’s receiving his inheritance. Land is being divided. Territory is being established. Promise is becoming reality.
She says: “Give me a blessing… give me also springs of water.”
prayer and disappointment
a/ Maybe for you, the ground feels dry in your faith.
b/ Maybe it’s your home.
c/ Maybe it’s your work.
d/ Or maybe you can’t even name it clearly.
And this is exactly where Pentecost meets this story. In Acts 1:8, Jesus looks at His disciples and says: “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses…” You will receive power (provision) to be my witnesses (inheritance).
Matthew 7 – “Which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? … If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!”
John 14:16–17, “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth…”
Don’t just accept the land. Ask for the springs.
