Martin Bisiker is the Founder and Creator of the non-profit Legasee, a website dedicated to archiving first-person accounts of World War II and other important conflicts in our history. The project started in 2010 when Martin first began interviewing British soldiers about the war. From there, the project has expanded and Martin’s passion continues to grow. On the show, Martin shares some of the amazing and heroic stories he’s learned from veterans and also shares why he doesn’t plan to stop recording first-person accounts of war anytime soon.
Key Takeaways:
[3:00] Who is Martin and what does he do?
[5:45] You don’t want to lose the memories of our World War II veterans.
[8:05] Legasee was founded to help the younger generation remember. If you wanted to hear these veterans stories before, you had to go to museum vaults to access it, which is not practical in this day and age.
[9:40] Martin does have plans to put these recordings on YouTube.
[10:15] In 2011, Martin founded the charity, but he has been working on it since 2010.
[12:15] These accounts are mostly focused on the British veterans who have fought.
[18:45] Martin’s volunteers are learning a lot of new skills about media, video editing, etc. as well.
[26:25] Martin talks about some of the amazing veterans he’s met along the way.
[36:15] What do the families of these veterans think of Martin’s work?
[42:55] Martin plans to set up a friendship line for these veterans because one of the things he’s noticed is that some of these veterans don’t speak to anybody and it can be quite lonely.
[47:00] What kind of lessons has Martin learned?
[49:35] After listening to so many first-person accounts of war, Martin gets much more emotional now that we still have wars going on in the world.
[56:00] What are the three words Martin would use to describe his commitment to giving back?

Welcome to the 45th episode of Giving Back Insights, my Thursday solo show where I talk about how our guests and their charities serve others, to explore actions each of can take to make a difference in people’s lives and to share. Today I’m discussing and highlighting the amazing service by charity change with Stephen Garten. Listen to today’s episode and don’t forget to give your feedback and valuable comment. Enjoy!
Key Takeaways:Stephen Garten is the creator of Charity Charge --- the first ever credit card that allows people to automatically donate cash back from their purchases to any nonprofit of any size. With the Charity Charge credit card, cardholders earn 1% cash back that they direct to any nonprofit in the form of an automatic, tax-deductible donation. Charity Charge was born as a way for Stephen to give back and moreover, as his way to make it incredibly easy for others to do the same each and every time they use their credit card, This is an amazing way for nonprofits to invite their supporters to donate without changing a thing. Whole Planet Foundation has already raised thousands of dollars in recurring revenue by getting their supporters to add Charity Charge to their wallet and I just don't see a downside in this way for every charity’s supporters to show their love every day without changing a thing they already do. Stephen’s on today’s show, check it out and use Charity Charge to power up your favorite charity www.CharityCharge.org Stephen at the 2015 South by Southwest festival when he introduced Charity Charge ***News flash: meet Stephen and the Charity Charge team November 6 - 9 in San Francisco at DreamForce, the annual SalesForce conference. Bonnie Low-Kramen worked in show business for 25 years as the personal assistant to Olympia Dukakis and Louis Zorich. It is amazing how much power an assistant holds; yet they’re often underpaid and are barely making ends meet, even when working for senior executives and CEOs. Through her experience, Bonnie was inspired to create the Speak Up! Pledge to help women in all types of work roles stand up, be confident, and be compensated fairly for what they’re worth.
Key Takeaways:
[2:15] What was it like working with the actress Olympia Dukakis?
[6:25] We only have 24-hours in a day. So it all boils down to, how are we effectively using those hours?
[7:05] In the United States, there are 4 million assistants and 95-98% of them are female.
[9:35] Where are the leaders learning how to manage human beings?
[11:45] There are four main things that staff want: respect, appreciation, fair compensation, and sense of value in the company.
[12:35] Staff in any given company protect the CEO from negativity. In turn, these leaders have no idea what’s really going on.
[14:10] People tend to confide in the assistant more than they do in the leader with negativity or secrets of what’s going on in the company. This makes assistants highly valuable.
[17:20] What people really want is a company culture that’s respectful. What are some of the ways you can show respect to your team?
[20:30] Women are really good leaders. However, what’s required from them to realize this about themselves is encouragement and training.
[21:10] Young girls have historically grown up and have been socialized into thinking that they wouldn’t make for good leaders.
[25:10] Bill Gates’s assistant came to one of Bonnie’s workshop classes. Assistants functioning at very high levels are well-aware they need ongoing training.
[27:50] Bonnie firmly believes companies will go out of business the moment they stop taking their team’s personal development seriously.
[29:45] The number one problem in our workplace is the issue of speaking up.
[34:25] Women are not asking for higher and better compensation. There is a shame around asking for money.
[43:55] Bonnie is offering scholarships to women who need training on how to effectively speak up.
[44:20] What kind of impact have the women experienced after joining the Speak Up! Pledge?
[53:05] Remember, only 7% of women ask for better or higher compensation.

Dwayne Paro is a veteran coach, contributor to the Huffington Post, and speaker. Dwayne is the founder of Landmark Life Coaching, where he uses his expertise to help veterans transition into the workforce. Dwayne himself is also a veteran who has served in the Air Force for eight years and has spent the past 20 years supporting the federal government as a contractor. On the show, Dwayne discusses how many of our soldiers have invisible wounds that they’re struggling to deal with every day, and how soldiers are finding it difficult to transition out of the military and into the workforce.
Key Takeaways:
[3:05] Who is Dwayne?
[6:20] Dwayne decide to create a life coaching practice that helps veterans transition out of the military.
[7:40] One of the best things we can do is create sustainable ways to give back. This is why Dwayne charges for life coaching services and provides free services to the veterans.
[10:55] When Dwayne was in the military, he felt like he had purpose.
[13:45] Not all veterans have visible wounds, but they do struggle and the general public simply aren’t aware of it.
[24:45] Oftentimes, we want things to happen and we want them to happen quickly, but life doesn’t work out that way.
[28:00] How does Dwayne structure his coaching sessions with veterans?
[37:45] You can’t just walk out of the military the way you can at a job. There are real life consequences not just for you, but for your team mates as well.
[38:15] What other things does Dwayne do to help veterans in his coaching sessions?
[43:45] When working closely with veterans, you also have to be very aware of how you word certain things, because it can be the difference between a veteran accepting help and being off put by it.
[47:55] What is Work of Honor about, and how do they help veterans?
[57:00] What is Platoon 22?
