Matthew 16:24 tells us that in order for one to follow Jesus they have to deny self, take up their cross and follow him. So, if you are someone that desires to walk in the way which God has ordained for you and even to see him work fully in your life. You have to first deny yourself and do what is needed to obtain that, which is intimacy with him.
