Wenn sich korrupte Politiker nicht nur die Taschen vollstopfen

2019 wurde Wolodymyr Selenskyj zum Präsidenten der Ukraine gewählt. Der ehemalige Schauspieler hatte in einer Fernsehserie einen Geschichtslehrer gespielt, der gegen Korruption wetterte und letztlich zum Präsidenten gewählt wurde. Auch im realen Wahlkampf versprach Selenskyj dann, die Korruption im Land zu bekämpfen. Als Pavlo Blavatskyy, Professor für Ökonomie an der Universität Montpellier davon erfuhr, begann er seine Forschung zum Thema Korruption. Da das Ausmaß von Korruption kaum messbar ist, begab sich Blavatskyy auf die Suche nach einem beobachtbaren Proxy. Mithilfe maschinellen Lernens leitete er aus den Fotos von 299 Kabinettsmitgliedern in 15 Ländern der ehemaligen Sowjetunion deren Body-Mass-Indizes (BMIs) ab. Er wies nach, dass diese BMIs positiv korreliert sind mit fünf gängigen Maßen für wahrgenommene Korruption, wofür er 2021 mit dem Ig Nobel Preis in Ökonomie ausgezeichnet wurde.
