Former press secretary for George W. Bush, Tony Snow, once said while battling terminal cancer, “We want lives of simple, predictable ease—smooth, even trails as far as the eye can see—but God likes to go off-road." Sometimes God decides to re-orient our life expectations. That is what happened to Elijah and in part three of the series, Facing Our Fears, Pastor Kevin will explore the life of Elijah and we will learn how to face the fear of Exploded Expectations.

One of the great fears that plagues Christians is the fear of the impossible—looming circumstances that seem to hopelessly paralyze us. What is needed is a new perspective that can help us break free from the paralysis of impossible situations. In a world where turmoil and uncertainty seem to dominate much of humanity’s existence, it’s easy to become discouraged, disappointed, and disillusioned. Many people turn to worldly solutions to find relief and rest from this reality, but each time they are left still searching for a solution, as other attempts were dead ends. How are we to navigate this present reality as children of the King? What solution will offer relief and rest? The Psalmist provides a clear and certain solution—praise! Praising God as the Sovereign One causes everything else to fade away and refocuses our life on what is MOST important. In this final message of the With the Psalmist We Pray series, Pastor Kyle will draw our attention to the prayer of the Psalmist, a prayer of total praise! 

Derek Kidner wrote, “God not only sees the invisible and penetrates the inaccessible, but He is operative there.” This truth is never more clearly revealed than in the 139th psalm, a psalm that underscores the great attributes of God and invites the believer to stand in awe of His marvelous character while inviting Him to search our hearts and reveal those areas of our lives that lack an appropriate witness to His holiness. Crawford Lorritts, speaking of the spiritually bankrupt culture in which we live said, “We are managing our sin rather than repenting of our sin.” If the truth be told, the notion of biblical repentance is rarely discussed in the Church today. This Sunday, in part four of his series, With the Psalmist we Pray, Pastor Kevin will explain what a repentant hearts looks like by exploring the powerful prayer of repentance by David after his sin with Bathsheba. This model of prayer, if followed, will lead to healthier spirituality and a deeper, more effective walk with Christ. 

British author and self-ascribed agnostic Julian Barnes wrote, “I don’t believe in God but I miss Him.” What could possibly make him write so vulnerably? The truth is that we were all made in the image of God and as James Mays writes, “God created the human soul to correspond to God.” This truth will be the focus of Pastor Kevin’s message as he continues the series With the Psalmist we Pray and from Psalm 42-43 shares the message, The Prayer of the Thirsty Exile.

An awe struck life is a humble life—“awe minimizes our individual identity and attunes us to things bigger than ourselves.” These are the words of Elizabeth Bernstein who also noted that “awe is a response to something vast.” God’s people are to be in awe of His vastness and our prayers should reflect the humility of one who is in awe of God. Psalm 30 unveils that type of prayer and it is the subject of Pastor Kevin’s message in part two of the six-part series, “With the Psalmist we Pray.”

Amir, the protagonist of the fiction novel, The Kite Runner, rehearsed in his mind his own failure to intervene; when at the age of 12, he watched as his friend was violently abused in a forsaken alley. In his fear, he did nothing and his failure to act haunted him. “Looking back now, I realize I have been peeking into that deserted alley for the last twenty-six years.” Christians remain haunted by the failures and sins of their past and cannot seem to break free. David had to deal with his own failures when he was forced to flee from his son, Absalom, who had usurped the throne from his father. In this context David penned the 3rd Psalm. Those ancient words still provide us great counsel as we wrestle with the failures of our own past.
