  • October 4th – XXVII Sunday in Ordinary Time (A)

    + Holy Gospel according to Saint Matthew 21: 33 – 46

    Hear another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard, put a hedge around it, dug a wine press in it, and built a tower. Then he leased it to tenants and went on a journey.  When vintage time drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants to obtain his produce. But the tenants seized the servants and one they beat, another they killed, and a third they stoned.

    Again he sent other servants, more numerous than the first ones, but they treated them in the same way.

    Finally, he sent his son to them, thinking, 'They will respect my son.' But when the tenants saw the son, they said to one another, 'This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and acquire his inheritance.' They seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him.

    What will the owner of the vineyard do to those tenants when he comes?"

    They answered him, "He will put those wretched men to a wretched death and lease his vineyard to other tenants who will give him the produce at the proper times."

    Jesus said to them, "Did you never read in the scriptures: 'The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; by the Lord has this been done, and it is wonderful in our eyes'?

    Therefore, I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that will produce its fruit. (The one who falls on this stone will be dashed to pieces; and it will crush anyone on whom it falls.)"

    When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they knew that he was speaking about them. And although they were attempting to arrest him, they feared the crowds, for they regarded him as a prophet.

    + Holy Gospel according to Saint Luke 10, 17-24

    The seventy-two disciples returned rejoicing and said to Jesus, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us because of your name.” Jesus said, “I have observed Satan fall like lightning from the sky. Behold, I have given you the power ‘to tread upon serpents’ and scorpions and upon the full force of the enemy and nothing will harm you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice because the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice because your names are written in heaven.” At that very moment he rejoiced (in) the holy Spirit and said, “I give you praise, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the childlike. Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him.” Turning to the disciples in private he said, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. For I say to you, many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it.”

  • October 2nd – XXVI Friday Ordinary Time + Memorial of the Holy Guardian Angels

    + Holy Gospel according to Saint Matthew 18:1-5, 10

    The disciples approached Jesus and said, “Who is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven?” He called a child over, placed it in their midst, and said, “Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the Kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven. And whoever receives one child such as this in my name receives me. “See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father.”

  • October 1st – XXVI Thursday in Ordinary Time (A) - Memorial of Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus, Virgin and Doctor of the Church

    + Holy Gospel according to Saint Luke  10:1-12

    Jesus appointed seventy-two other disciples

    whom he sent ahead of him in pairs

    to every town and place he intended to visit.

    He said to them,

    “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few;

    so ask the master of the harvest

    to send out laborers for his harvest.

    Go on your way;

    behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves.

    Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals;

    and greet no one along the way.

    Into whatever house you enter, first say,

    ‘Peace to this household.’

    If a peaceful person lives there,

    your peace will rest on him;

    but if not, it will return to you.

    Stay in the same house and eat and drink what is offered to you,

    for the laborer deserves his payment.

    Do not move about from one house to another.

    Whatever town you enter and they welcome you,

    eat what is set before you,

    cure the sick in it and say to them,

    ‘The Kingdom of God is at hand for you.’

    Whatever town you enter and they do not receive you,

    go out into the streets and say,

    ‘The dust of your town that clings to our feet,

    even that we shake off against you.’

    Yet know this: the Kingdom of God is at hand.

    I tell you,

    it will be more tolerable for Sodom on that day

    than for that town.”

    + Holy Gospel according to St. Luke 9, 57-62

    As they were proceeding on their journey someone said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go." Jesus answered him, "Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head."

    And to another he said, "Follow me." But he replied, "(Lord,) let me go first and bury my father." But he answered him, "Let the dead bury their dead. But you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God."

    And another said, "I will follow you, Lord, but first let me say farewell to my family at home." (To him) Jesus said, "No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for the kingdom of God."

    + Holy Gospel according to St. John 1: 47 – 51

    Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, "Here is a true Israelite. There is no duplicity in him."

    Nathanael said to him, "How do you know me?"

    Jesus answered and said to him, "Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree."

    Nathanael answered him, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel."

    Jesus answered and said to him, "Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this." And he said to him, "Amen, amen, I say to you, you will see the sky opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man."

    + Holy Gospel according to Saint Luke 9, 46-50

    “An argument arose among the disciples about which of them was the greatest. Jesus realized the intention of their hearts and took a child and placed it by his side and said to them, “Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me. For the one who is least among all of you is the one who is the greatest.”

    Then John said in reply, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name  and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow in our company.”

    Jesus said to him, “Do not prevent him, for whoever is not against you is for you.”

    + Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew 21: 28 – 32

    "What is your opinion? A man had two sons. He came to the first and said, 'Son, go out and work in the vineyard today.' He said in reply, 'I will not,' but afterwards he changed his mind and went. The man came to the other son and gave the same order. He said in reply, 'Yes, sir,' but did not go. Which of the two did his father's will?"

    They answered, "The first."

    Jesus said to them, "Amen, I say to you, tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God before you. When John came to you in the way of righteousness, you did not believe him; but tax collectors and prostitutes did. Yet even when you saw that, you did not later change your minds and believe him.

    + Holy Gospel according to St. Luke 9: 43b – 45

    And all were astonished by the majesty of God. While they were all amazed at his every deed, he said to his disciples, "Pay attention to what I am telling you. The Son of Man is to be handed over to men."

    But they did not understand this saying; its meaning was hidden from them so that they should not understand it, and they were afraid to ask him about this saying.

    + Holy Gospel according to Saint Luke 9: 18-22

    Once when Jesus was praying in solitude, and the disciples were with him, he asked them, “Who do the crowds say that I am?” They said in reply, “John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, ‘One of the ancient prophets has arisen.’” Then he said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”

    Peter said in reply, “The Christ of God.” He rebuked them and directed them not to tell this to anyone.

    He said, “The Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised.”
