1 Kings 17:7–9 (ESV): “And after a while the brook dried up, because there was no rain in the land. Then the word of the Lord came to him…”
Have you ever experienced a season when something you depended on suddenly changed or disappeared?
Maybe it was a job, a source of income, a relationship, an opportunity, or simply a season of stability. When something familiar begins to “dry up,” our first reaction may be to wonder, “What happened? Did I do something wrong? Has God forgotten me?”
Elijah experienced something similar.
God had specifically told him to hide by the brook Cherith. There, God provided water from the brook and commanded ravens to bring him food. Elijah was exactly where God had told him to be.
And yet, the brook dried up.
The dried brook did not mean Elijah had stepped outside God’s will. It did not mean God had abandoned him. It meant God was about to lead him somewhere else.
This is an important lesson: the brook was God’s instrument, but God was the source.
Elijah could drink from the brook, but he was not supposed to depend on the brook. He could receive food from the ravens, but the ravens were not his provider. Later, God would provide through a widow in Zarephath. The means changed, but the Source remained the same.
The same can happen in our lives. A job can be a brook. A salary can be a brook. A person, ministry opportunity, good health, or comfortable routine can become a brook. These may all be good gifts from God, but they are not God Himself.
Sometimes God allows the channel of His provision to change so that we learn to depend more deeply on Him.
When the brook dried up, notice what happened next: “Then the word of the Lord came to him” (1 Kings 17:8). God had not forgotten Elijah. He already knew where Elijah needed to go next, and He had already prepared another means of provision.
So when something in your life seems to be drying up, do not assume that God has stopped caring. The channel may change, but the Source remains.
When the brook dries up, trust the Source, not the supply.
Reflection:
Is there something in your life that you have begun to depend on more than God? If that “brook” changes, can you still trust that God knows what you need and how to provide?
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for being my faithful Provider. Help me not to place my security in the things You use to provide for me, but in You alone. When circumstances change and the path ahead is uncertain, teach me to trust Your Word, follow Your leading, and depend on Your provision. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
