Hi team,
I wanted to share this podcast with you. Global Horizons is Australia's international education podcast. It features interviews with leading professionals, as well as fortnightly episodes covering the most important international education news, co-hosted with Dirk Mulder, the editor of The Koala News. You can find the podcast here: https://www.globalsociety.com.au/podcast
Here we go:
2024! Bring it on!
Each week on Global Horizons you'll either be meeting someone interesting from the industry to hear their stories and experiences, or getting all the latest international education news that you need to know.
Plus, in season 2 we have a few surprises in store!
Thanks for joining me on The Global Horizons Podcast.
Just as campuses are going quiet and Australian international educators are turning their minds to the Christmas BBQ, what should drop but another review from the federal Government.
Not that it's a criticism. This year has seen a huge body of policy consultation and work done on international ed by the feds. It feels like our $30 billion industry is starting to get some of the attention it deserves.
This week's review is a massive one - the Government's response to the Migration Review. It's been described as a "once in a generation" piece of work.
Whilst international education is only one part of the review, there are some significant changes coming for our industry that will certainly have an impact on both students and institutions. So we're fortunate to have Dirk Mulder from Australia's international education news source, The Koala News, on the podcast to break down all the key outcomes and what you need to know.
This is the final episode of Global Horizons for the year. We'll be back in your podcast feed on February 1, 2024. Until then - have yourself a wonderful end to 2023 and a well-earned break.
This week's guest on Global Horizons is Julian O'Shea, a lecturer at Monash University and international education entrepreneur and innovator.
In fact, maybe that's selling Julian a little short.
He's also a multiple Guinness World Record holder, successful YouTuber, and engineer.
I know, one of those annoyingly brilliant polymaths, right? 😂
The fact is, Julian is one of the most interesting people in Australian international education. An innovator who's hunger to push the limits has led to some truly wonderful initiatives.
And, importantly for a podcast, he's a great storyteller too!
In this episode we talk about:
Julian's Guinness World Records achievements
His background and involvement in education, from engineering and sustainable transport to education with social impact.
Experience in managing international education programs:
Julian's YouTube channel and crafting an engaging hook for capturing audience interest.
The impact of AI on content creation.
You can find Julian on LinkedIn and YouTube
In this week's episode of Global Horizons we're joined by higher education podcaster and consultant, Claire Field, for a break down of the biggest stories in Australian international education.
Along with Dirk Mulder (Editor, The Koala News) and Rob Malicki (CEO, The Global Society) some of the topics covered include:
- Claire's analysis of the various reviews underway that impact Australian higher and international education
- Analysis of some of the recent discussion about placing caps on international students
- Research by Ly Tran et al on the underutilisation of international student graduates
This episode was a lot of fun for all of us and it was really interesting to discuss Claire's recent trip to Egypt and Jordan too. Good travel stories are, of course, an important part of what makes us international educators!

Without putting too finer point on it, Jessica Gallagher is one of the superstars of Australian higher education. Following her on LinkedIn is like following a tornado of positive energy, meaningful projects, impact and change.
Jessica is the Deputy Vice Chancellor of External Engagement at the University of Adelaide. However, over the years, she’s had roles straddling international education, partnerships, entrepreneurship, engagement, learning abroad and more.
This is a fantastic conversation that we really enjoyed – there are some incredible travel stories, but also unique insights into where Australian higher education (and international education) are heading.

Kent Anderson is the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Global Engagement and Partnerships at the University of Newcastle. But critically, he's a fantastic storyteller, and even though I've known him for over a decade, there were plenty of surprising stories in this conversation that I hadn't heard before.
More than anyone I know, Kent has the ability to cut to the heart of an issue or question, to reframe or refocus it if necessary, and to come up with logical, structured responses.
It's an irritating superpower... I've sat in many a meeting wishing I'd come up with the succinct analysis that Kent had just delivered.
This conversation was not only a lot of fun, but incredibly insightful into the way Governments and universities can develop effective policy, how to align stakeholders around a vision, and reasons to be optimistic for the future of international education.
Kent is honest, engaging and thoughtful - you're going to love this.

Rebecca Hall is, you could say, a bit of an Australian international education legend.
For decades, she's driven policy and operational change across the sector, from higher education to vocational ed to all levels of Government.
I've known Rebecca for the best part of 15 years, and she taught me some of my favourite consulting techniques - techniques that are as robust today as they were back then! (Post-It Note planning, and decision matrices, anyone?)
What's always fascinated me about Rebecca is how she is seamlessly able to glide from one sector or organisation to another without skipping a beat. She's instantly able to capture the minutiae of policy detail, to talk the language, and to work confidently and reassuringly with key stakeholders. It's like magic.
But this conversation surprised even me - from how Rebecca ended up in international ed, through to her adventurous travels and career advice, there are just so many actionable nuggets of wisdom in this interview.
We talk about:
defining success
career transitions
entry points into international education
the importance of learning and curiosity
the role of government in industry transformation
the impact of technology, particularly AI, on recruitment
the need for mutual recognition of qualifications and more.
