Ever feel like you’ve lost your flow on the bike? Maybe trails that used to feel fun now feel overwhelming, or it’s just harder to get out the door. In this episode, we dive into the psychology of getting over a slump and finding joy in riding again.

Drawing inspiration from Jake Johnston’s great YouTube video and the work of sports psychologist Dr. Craig Manning, we break down:

✅ What a slump really is – when interference (injury, distraction, self-doubt, past crashes) keeps you from your true potential.

 ✅ The ABCs of sport psychology:

• Awareness – recognizing where you’re at on the performance bell curve.
• Breathing – using your breath to shift your nervous system and manage energy.
• Concentration – keeping it simple and staying present (think 3 cues max: pump, breathe, look).

 ✅ Practical tips to beat the slump – from riding new trails, cross-training, and yoga to upgrading your bike, sessioning features, or even braving a rainy ride.

We also share personal insights on how to reset your mindset, set small goals, and bring the fun back to your rides.

🌍 Trail Shoutout: We head to Nesbyen, Norway with guide Will Gibson of AnyExcuseToRide.com. From e-bike shuttles and cozy guest housing to the iconic HallingSpranget flow trail and stunning fjord views, Norway’s riding is challenging, beautiful, and unforgettable.

🔥 Trail Network Shoutout: Musquash Conservation Area in Londonderry, NH is managed by the Londonderry Conservation Commission the area includes an extensive marked 20+ miles trail system. 

There is a little something for everyone, but it is mostly moderately difficult cross country terrain. It doesn’t have extended climbing but there are some short punchy stuff.

Favorite trails - Rip it up on Deer and Porcupine Ridge loops and shoot over to Piper’s for some rocky sections.  Heron is a nice, long trail that provides decent challenges. Go to Trivial Pursuit, Whaddya Think and Three Sisters for solid twisty, beautiful NH singletrack and White and Shoots and Ladders for slightly more challenging terrain.

Let’s face it—falls happen. But did you know you can actually get better at bailing? In this episode, we break down key techniques to minimize trauma when things don’t go as planned. From riding within your limits to practicing exit strategies, we cover how to fall smarter and get back on the bike.

Some tips we dive into:

✅ Wear protective gear—helmet, pads, gloves, sunglasses

✅ Learn exit techniques like the North Shore dismount, tuck & roll, and how to ditch your bike safely

🔥 Trail Network Shoutout: Pine Hill Park in Rutland, VT home of Cold Rolled Fat Bike Festival! With 18 miles of singletrack, it’s a great spot to ride early in the season. Steward by Pine Hill Partnership, a non-profit run by volunteers. Don’t forget to tip the Tin Man when visiting!

Favorite trails: Stegosaurus, Milk Run, Half Pipe, and Rembrandt’s Brush. Don’t forget to check out the 7 distinct and fun bridges, including the suspension bridge!
