When my sister’s car was sliding down the hill in the snow and we couldn’t gain traction, we began sliding backwards down the hill and losing control of the car—it was literally spinning and we had no control. People were driving around us, beeping at us and yelling at us from their windows but no one stopped to help us. While the car was still slowly moving I jumped out and tried to push the car up the hill. Once I did that, no one else was beeping, no one was yelling, instead, people who were traveling in both directions on the street jumped out of their cars to help us push the car up the hill.
When I realized I needed a team, and wanted people to believe in my mission enough to help me push this company forward, I had to first help myself. I had to push it forward myself before others would believe in the mission and help me build it.
Everyone I told my dream to, family and friends said “man, Trav, that’s a great idea! I’d love to help…” But when I needed them, not every one showed up. Once I helped myself, and just did it without the help at first, they saw that I was serious and that this was something they could get behind and something that was worth their efforts. Now, today, whether it’s Philadelphia, my home town, or LA, my new home, or anywhere in between, I have people that will give their time and effort to help me without asking anything in return. When we show up to do events, we often have too many people helping us, 15-25 people volunteering their time and offering their support! But it all started with me helping myself.
Others WILL HELP you when they see you helping yourself.
Help yourself—and Go Be Great!
