On today’s show, we get to meet Eldred Bills. Eldred served in the New England states mission in 1965-1967. His mission president is someone you might recognize. And in my missionary minute, I talk about obedience.

In today’s missionary minute…   I was thinking about obedience.  In D&C 130 verses 20-21 it says: 20 There is a law, irrevocably decreed in heaven before the foundations of this world, upon which all blessings are predicated—

21 And when we obtain any blessing from God, it is by obedience to that law upon which it is predicated.

Obedience is a fundamental gospel principle to learn in our mortality. It is required for our eternal salvation. We must keep the commandments. When we do, there are blessings tied to each commandment. It is god’s lawn. Obey this commandment, and we are blessed. When we obey the commandments, then God’s Spirit can be with us because we are in harmony with Him and His laws.  The mission is a microcosm of life and when I was obedient on my mission, I saw blessings. God could work with me and bless me because of my obedience. It’s true today. As I am obedient, I will have His Spirit to be with me. He has made that covenant with us who have been baptized in His Church, and it’s repeated each week in the sacrament prayer. Our faith leads us to act and keep the commandments. It’s our obedience which shows our love to our Heavenly Father.

On today’s show, we get to meet Donna and Weldon Kitchen. Weldon has a one-of-a-kind story as he was one of 4 missionaries to open up Taiwan in 1956 before the country had even been dedicated for the preaching of the gospel. We’ll also get to hear about their missionary service together in both Taiwan and Canada as senior missionaries. And in our missionary minute, I share my thoughts on the weak and simple. So, onward, ever onward, let’s get to it!

In today’s missionary minute… I’ve been thinking about how the Lord takes the weak and simple and does great things. This was true with Moses. This was true with Joseph Smith. With God all things are possible.

We may not think that what we do with our children, or our calling at church have much consequence in the Kingdom of God. Who would have thought that a young man from a small town in Utah in 1956 would have much of an influence on the entire country of Taiwan?

I think God has a great work for each of us to do. “The weak things of the world shall come forth and break down the mighty and strong ones … that mine everlasting covenant might be established; that the fulness of my gospel might be proclaimed by the weak and the simple unto the ends of the world, and before kings and rulers” (D&C 1:19-24).

You may not think of yourself as much of a missionary, but I think that we can all pray for opportunities to be kind, to show love. Then we might be given opportunities as we go forth in our everyday life to love, share and invite.

On today’s show, we get to meet Crista White, a sister missionary who I served with in the wonderful France, Bordeaux mission and we get to hear about her experiences in one of the most beautiful countries in the world. Yes, I am a little biased.

And in my missionary minute, I share my thoughts on serving each other so, let’s get to it!.

In today’s missionary minute… Crista mentioned how she learned to love and serve others as one of her big takeaways from her missionary service. An often-quoted scripture from the Book of Mormon comes from Mosiah 2 where King Benjamin, a leader and prophet for his people taught that “When ye are in the service of your fellow beings, ye are only in the service of your God.” That was true 2,000 years ago and it’s true today. Crista and I served together with 6 total missionaries in this beautiful coastal Port town of La Rochelle. There was a special bond between us. I was only there for 4 months out of my entire life.  But when I get together with those people, we are still close, we laugh, and we have a love for each other. I didn’t know going into the mission, and I don’t think I even realized as a missionary, that I was making life-long friends, both with the fellow missionaries, but with the members and those investigating the Church as well. One of the reasons there is that life-long bond is because of what King Benjamin was teaching. As a priesthood holder and an Elder in the Church, we would often give blessings to the sister missionaries when they were sick or in need of a blessing. They might bake us cookies, or we would sometimes take turns as companionship and make dinner for the district which was the 6 of us. 4 Elders and two Sisters. We prayed together, often multiple times a day. We prayed for each others friends who were investigating the Church. We called them les amis de l’eglise. We were young and inexperienced and relying on faith and the Lord to guide us in His work, and we just came to love each other as brothers and sisters. I was blessed to be in the service of my fellow beings in France.

On today’s show, we get to meet Shawn Rapier, a dear friend of mine, and that probably doesn’t quite describe our friendship, Shawn is one of my very closest friends. He is the host of the Latter-day Lives podcast, a father of 8, he’s a world-class business professional, an award-winning competition BBQ chef, a crazy-good foosball player, and so much more. But this show is about missionaries, and Shawn served his mission in Chile and I think you’re going to love hearing about his experiences.

And in my missionary minute, I share my thoughts on the voice of a trump, so, onward, ever onward, let’s get to it!

Isn’t Shawn the best? I’m really blessed to call him my friend and he wasn’t kidding when he mentioned all the time that we’ve spent together. We were co-workers and later business partners and we are life-long friends who still catch up almost every week.

In today’s missionary minute…

The conversation with Shawn reminded me of at a certain point when I was on my mission and I read Alma 29 verse one, and I’m sure I’m not the only missionary who has thought this, but when I read “O that I were an angel, and could have the wish of mine heart, that I might go forth and speak with the trump of God, with a voice to shake the earth, and cry repentance unto every people!”  I wanted this very same thing. It was the greatest desire of my heart that everyone would listen to the glorious message of the gospel. In the cites where I served, nothing was more important than the message we were sharing. Whatever was occupying people’s time, it was not as important as the message that Jesus Christ’s restored church was on the earth and that there was a living prophet who speaks for Him. That there were additional scriptures to the Bible giving further truth and light.  That forgiveness of our sins was available through repentance and baptism and because of the grace of God and the Atonement of Jesus Christ, all of us would rise from the grave never to die again. Isn’t that the type of message that needs to shake the ground? I wanted to high-five Alma. I still want to high-five Alma. But with COVID, maybe I’d settle for a fist-bump.

Welcome to the Go Ye Forth podcast, where we hear inspiring stories from returned missionaries of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who have served all across the globe. I am your host Jason Bringhurst.

Welcome everyone to the introductory episode! I wanted to have this first episode of this band-new new podcast be a landing point where someone could quickly get an idea of what the podcast was all about.

As an introduction, my name is Jason Bringhurst. I live in the lovely town of Port Angeles, Washington up in the northwest. We are in an area that is pretty much as northwest as you can get. I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I served a mission in Bordeaux, France. I  have a passion for missionary work, cars, and a good pizza - so if I could do missionary work while driving a hot rod and eating pizza, I would have my dream job. I have six incredible children, 3 of whom are off at college and three who are at home. Their ages range from 24 to 9 years old. I recently finished the Rocky Mountain Sunshine podcast and I am the host of the Go Ye Forth podcast.

I’m the husband of the lovely and talented Jen Bringhurst. We moved to Port Angeles three years ago from Highland, Utah to be closer to her parents and she is a part-time provider for their needs as they are getting more advanced in this mortal journey.  In her spare time, she studies the gospel, teaches early-morning seminary, runs the home, and tries to read fiction books as much as possible.

There are two wards in Port Angeles. We are active in our ward and enjoy the closeness that we have with the members here.

As the introduction says, on this podcast we will have fun conversations with returned missionaries and hear about their service and uplifting experiences as they preached the gospel to the four corners of this beautiful planet. Thanks for coming along!
