In this episode I will be reading a handful of experiences with fairies across a variety of cultures. The main sources are the Fairy Census and Reddit, but I consult a few others for additional experiences and information about specific cultural beings.

There are the dangerous fairy winds of Ireland, leprechauns on the loose in Pennsylvania, the waterfall dwelling chaneques of Mexico, and many first-hand encounters.

In this episode I speak with Timothy Renner about his latest book The Keystone Hagstone: Faeries and Other Mysterious Entities of Pennsylvania. Tim has lovingly gathered Pennsylvania folklore regarding fairies, witches, spectral hounds, eternal hunters (and so much more) and compiled it in this manuscript. We talk about these topics and go over excerpts of the book, while commenting on the nature of folklore and the paranormal.

We make sure to highlight some of the weirdest, spookiest, and most magical entries in the Keystone Hagstone, and briefly highlight another booklet Tim has republished, Edric and Sylvaine, a romantic tale of a minstrel and his fairy wife.

In this episode I read accounts of strange supernatural encounters from Reddit. These stories are from a variety of cultures and geographic locations, and spring forth a treasure trove of fascinating folklore. In between stories I read comments that share additional anecdotes, and expand on the folklore found in these tales. We’re talking giants, elves, witches, spectral horsemen, nymphs, and more… These stories and legends come from Albania, Greece, Indonesia, El Salvador, Pakistan, Slovenia, Nicaragua–the list goes on…

In this video I will be talking extensively about Biringan City, a legendary city said to be invisible to humans and populated by engkanto, beings that are very similar to fairies in Celtic folklore.

Biringan is said to be hidden somewhere within the forests and mountains of Samar, an ultramodern (even futuristic) city, where buildings, clothing, and food is black. You can happen upon it by accident, glimpse it in the shifting sea-mists, or perhaps be ‘invited’ by an engkanto who has fallen in love with you.

The engkanto are said to look mostly human, except that they are extremely beautiful and lacking a philtrum. But to court them is to invite danger. You could go mad, fall ill, or disappear–wandering into the forest never to be seen again.

Tonight I’ll be reading accounts from the Fairy Census, an ongoing academic research project conducted by Dr. Simon Young. This survey gathers and presents anonymous encounters with fairies. You may have a certain image in your head of what a fairy looks like, but this variety of experiences will show that fairies are perceived to take a whole host of forms.

In this episode I’ll be reading experiences and comments on Reddit about people remembering seeing a green hand as a child. The similarities in the stories and the way this idea or memory resonated with so many people fascinated me, and I felt compelled to make this episode. As well as reading the stories and marking similarities, I’ll also touch on pop culture references brought up that may have induced this imagery, and muse on the role that the green severed hand has had in our collective subconscious.
