Sadly, in the time of Jesus, those who had the Scriptures and claimed to be the most devoted to God were the very ones who ridiculed, mocked, and rejected Christ above all others. This passage shows the religious leaders treating Jesus with contempt and ridicule. Our Savior responded by rebuking them in love and pointing them to the validity of God's law and the wonderful truth of the gospel.
