Complex PTSD is PTSD that is the result of long-term or ongoing trauma, such as emotional abuse in childhood or in a romantic relationship.
Today's episode is going to be a personal one. I'm going to share with you what it's like to live with CPTSD, and what I've learned along the way.
Firstly, let me explain what CPTSD is. It's a type of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that occurs as a result of prolonged or repeated exposure to traumatic events, such as abuse, neglect, or violence. CPTSD can cause a range of symptoms, including anxiety, depression, flashbacks, hypervigilance, and emotional dysregulation.
Living with CPTSD is a constant battle. It's like living with an invisible monster that lurks in the shadows, waiting to pounce when you least expect it. For me, the symptoms of CPTSD can be triggered by something as simple as a loud noise or a certain smell. When that happens, it's like my body goes into fight or flight mode, and I feel completely overwhelmed.
One of the biggest challenges of living with CPTSD is the impact it has on relationships. It can be difficult to explain to others why you react in certain ways, or why you might suddenly withdraw from a situation. For me, it's taken a lot of time and effort to learn how to communicate my needs to others, and to find people who are understanding and supportive.
Listen to today's episode to find out more about my journey with CPTSD and how I deal with it.
