We live in this world that sells a false definition of freedom.. We’re told that freedom means total lawlessness, having no discipline, answering to no one, and doing whatever we want, whenever we want. But the human soul does not actually thrive in chaos.

Like a river, a river is powerful, beautiful, and free. But a river without banks is just a flood. It becomes a destructive puddle that goes nowhere. The river actually wants its banks. It needs the riverbeds to hold it, to give it direction, and to allow its power to rush forward toward the ocean (source) 

In the same way, true human freedom is not found in the absence of structure or discipline, it is found in the embrace of discipline.

When we resist discipline and obedience, we think we are defending our freedom. In reality, we are rejecting our own safety. In holy obedience, there is a deep sense of trust and safety. It allows us to rest because we are no longer drifting aimlessly. We are anchored. The very things our ego resists are the exact structures that liberate our souls.

This is why God will often tell us no at points in time. 

When you hear a “no” from Christ, it is never a rejection or a punishment. It’s a boundary. God says no because there is a massive, YES awaiting you down the river. That yes cannot be handed to you until you have been shaped by the banks of discipline. It is waiting for the moment you fully mature, step out of the illusion of chaotic freedom, and finally become who you have always been destined to be.

You might think the friend who offers to do your homework cares about you the most. But when you finally have to take a test or face real life, you’ll probably end up resentful because by doing the work for you, they robbed you of the chance to actually learn it yourself.
