Prayer is powerful. In James 5, the half- brother of Jesus observes that prayer is a mighty force and necessary in all types of situations, both good and bad, both individually and corporately. How do we use prayer effectively?

First, James says we should pray when we are suffering or in trouble (v. 13). When we pray, we should tell God about our situation and ask for His divine guidance. Trouble is inevitable and an easy life is not guaranteed for the believer. So instead of grumbling about our situation, we are to pray.

Second, if things are going well, we should sing, praising the Lord. Praise is a great indicator of our gratefulness to God. The apostle Paul echoes this advice: “Be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Eph. 5:18–20).

Third, we should pray for healing. Here, James is referring to a serious illness. The person who wants to be healed should call for the leaders of the church to pray over him or her. Faith surrounds this entire process. The sick person asks in faith. The leaders gather in faith. The prayer is offered in faith. The oil is administered in faith. If the Lord wills, the sick will be made well, and sins will be forgiven. This does not negate the need to get medical attention but demonstrates that ultimately our trust is in the Lord.

When our need is great, we are to pray to the Lord. Elijah is given as an example of one who trusted God, and God answered his prayers (v. 17). He was not a superhero, just a person like us who trusted God.
