Let the one who is taught the word share all good things with the one who teaches.

SUPPORT YOUR PASTOR.

One of the spiritual gifts mentioned in the New Testament for the edifying of the church is that of pastor-teacher. “And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers.” [Eph 4:11] They are given the unique ability by God through the Spirit to teach His Word to others. Generally, most churches have full-time pastors. But, a few have either volunteer or part-time pastors, especially if the church is new and small.

Unlike a classroom teacher, they are expected to teach more by their ways more than their words; more by their lives than their lips. “Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith.”[Heb 13:7] Their example is of prime importance.Peter has instructed the pastors, saying, “shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; 3 not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock.”[1 Pet 5:2-3] Even, Paul has emphasized the character of a pastor than his competence. He said, “The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task. Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God's church? He must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil.”[1 Tim 3:1-7]. It’s no wonder that James has to say, “Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness.”[Jas 3:1]

As part of the general rule of bearing one another’s burden, the church should share "all good things" with those who teach. That is, providing for those who teach the Word is part of the load each of us should carry. The material support is purely logical or it has a lot of common sense. Thus, Paul asked, “Who serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard without eating any of its fruit? Or who tends a flock without getting some of the milk? [1 Cor 9:7] The Lord Jesus also has expressed this when He sent the twelve disciples, saying, “Acquire no gold or silver or copper for your belts, no bag for your journey, or two tunics or sandals or a staff, for the laborer deserves his food.” [Matt 10:9,10]

Moreover, it is also lawful. Paul continued to ask, “Do I say these things on human authority? Does not the Law say the same? 9 For it is written in the Law of Moses, “You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain.” Is it for oxen that God is concerned?” [1 Cor 9:8] Most importantly, it should be done to honor them. For Paul has also written, “Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching. For the Scripture says, “You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain,” and, “The laborer deserves his wages.”[1 Tim 5:17,18]

Definitely, the sharing of good things to your pastor is love in action.

 Galatians 6:3-5 ESV

3 For if anyone thinks he is something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself. 4 But let each one test his own work, and then his reason to boast will be in himself alone and not in his neighbor. 5 For each will have to bear his own load.

THE LONE RANGER CHRISTIAN MYTH

“If you want to travel faster, walk alone. But, if you want to travel farther, walk together.” This is exactly true in our Christian life. You and I will run out of gas if we travel alone. Our Christian journey is meant to be a community endeavor. We must carry our burdens together. As Heb 10:24,25 says, “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”

The imagery of the church as a body makes isolation of a believer impossible. Paul said, “For the body does not consist of one member but of many. If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. If all were a single member, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, yet one body.” [1 Cor 12:14-20]

The reason is pride. What happens when we see ourselves as self-reliant? We don’t need anyone’s help to carry our load, even when it gets too heavy for us. Or, perhaps, we are simply too proud to do the work of carrying another's burden. We must not fall into the trap of seeing ourselves as the source of our own strength to follow Jesus.

An over estimation of ourselves is lethal to our own downfall. One of the causes is the evil of posturing ourselves as better than others. Paul had warned, “When they measure themselves by one another and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding.”[2 Cor 10:12b]

Having been called as one body, we should always seek to engage one another, should we not? As Rom 12:3-5 says, “For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another “ Paul even added, “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”[Phil 2:3,4]

Today, let’s avoid the lone ranger Christian myth.

Galatians 6:1-2 ESV

Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. 2 Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

Mga kapatid, kung ang isang tao ay natagpuan sa anumang pagsuway, kayong mga espirituwal ay dapat panunumbalikin siya sa espiritu ng kaamuan. Tingnan ang iyong sarili, baka ikaw ay matukso rin. 2 Dalhin ninyo ang mga pasanin ng isa't isa, at sa gayon ay matutupad ninyo ang kautusan ni Cristo.

FULFILL THE LAW OF CHRIST.

Believers are not perfect. A tragedy of being ‘caught in’ sin may happen an individual believer. Believers may commit sin, advertently or inadvertently. The devil is so subtle. Thus, we might be deceived by his lies through the promptings of our flesh. For this, James has warned us, “each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.”[Jas 1:13,14]

For this, the church community, as a whole, has to take steps in restoring the concerned person back to his fellowship with God and the believers. The word  "restore" is commonly used in common Greek in resetting broken bones, and for mending fishing nets. Thus, to "restore" something broken is to make it whole and functional again. When it comes to a fallen brother into sinning,  itinvolves repentance and a return to Spirit-powered living. We can help each other do that.

Our spiritual growth takes place in a community. As the African proverb goes, “It takes the whole village to raise a child.” Thus, we must “exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you[us]  may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.”[Heb 3:13]

The dynamics of Christ’s followers helping each other to recover from a fall confirms the authenticity of Christ’s love among them. Paul has reminded us, “And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all.” [1 Thess 5:14]   In order to carry each other’s loads, we do really need patience, don’t we? Love indeed is being patient to help each other not to continue living in sin. [1 Cor 13:4] “And as Jesus has said, “By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”[John 13:35]

Galatians 5:24-26 ESV

24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

LIVE BY THE SPIRIT

Crucifixion of the flesh is the mark of the true believer. He has died to self in order to be alive in Christ. That is, it is governed by the Spirit not by the flesh anymore. The Spirit’s life-giving power is appropriated by faith. It does follow that we must yield to his control, moment by moment.

Living in the Spirit is keeping in step with the His pace. Christians are neither robots nor machines. They exercise their volitions to follow Him. There is a recognition of the promptings of the flesh but the promptings of the Spirit is opted as a driver following a gps.

Spirit-led-Christians should be noted by the things they don’t do. But, these are naturally done or practiced by the natural person. That, Christians should not be conceited, provoking and envying one another. Definitely, these are expressions of promoting the flesh.

Following Jesus is not a walk in the park. It’s not just a counter-culture but also a counter-self. Practically, a daily funeral is needed everyday to our flesh. Thus, Paul has charged us “to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires,  and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds,  and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.”[Eph 4:22-24]

Galatians 5:22-23 ESV

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

22 Subalit ang bunga ng Espiritu ay pag-ibig, kagalakan, kapayapaan, pagtitiyaga, kagandahang-loob, kabutihan, katapatan, 23 kaamuan, at pagpipigil sa sarili. Laban sa mga ito ay walang kautusan.

THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT

The image of a believer like a fruit bearing tree is fascinating, isn’t it. Firstly, it reminds us of a healthy plant. Like a sickly plant that doesn’t bear fruits is a believer whose spiritual life is a struggle. Jesus liken him to a branch that doesn’t abide to the vine. Thus, He said, “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” [John 15:4,5]

This fruit is of the Spirit. Although, its stalk is attached directly to the branch, it doesn’t belong to it. Simply stated, the branch is just a bearer of it and has no rightful claim to it. Why? The branch, was once an undesirable one, having been grafted in into the trunk. In other words, the life comes from the trunk. Similarly, the Spirit is our life. Thus, a believer who knows how to love could humbly acknowledge that it’s God’s love, not his. As Paul has declared, “God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.”[Rom 5:5]

Moreover, this fruit is multifaceted, like a gem with nine facets that glitters. Each facet is distinct yet complementary and co-equal to each other. We couldn’t emphasize one and neglect the others. Should you want one, you have to get all. Isn’t it weird for a believer to just want joy and neglect to be kind or patient? At some moments of special needs in our lives, one facet can be prominent without negating the others. For example, a believer who is provoked to anger, could display his patience more than the others at the particular moment when he depends upon the Spirit.

Lastly, the Spirit will bring blamelessness to the believer should He is in control. Where the Spirit is, there is liberty to do the will of God and serve people.

Galatians 5:16-21 ESV

16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21 envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

21 pagkainggit, paglalasing, kalayawan, at ang mga katulad nito. Binabalaan ko kayo, gaya ng aking pagbabala noong una sa inyo, na ang mga gumagawa ng gayong mga bagay ay hindi magmamana ng kaharian ng Diyos.

WALK BY THE SPIRIT.

The imagery of us having a war with our flesh gives us warning not to take second chances in winning. ‘The desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.’ We have no control over this reality. But, to accept that tension within us is a normal phenomenon just as the atmospheric pressure that presses our skin twenty-four-seven.

Thankfully, He gives us the Spirit of liberty [2 Cor 3;17]. From the clutches of the flesh, we can be free. Thus, it is essential to yield to His control. Let us ‘not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit.’ [Eph 5:18] Should we be led by the Spirit, we won’t be condemned under the law. That is, we would be blameless from the ugly works of the flesh.

Otherwise, a person who continues and love to practice sin does show that he doesn’t belong to God’s kingdom. The apostle John has declared, “Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him.”[1 John 3:4-6]

In other words, a true believer may sin but he doesn’t live a lifestyle of sinfulness. As he continues to walk and depend upon the Spirit, he progress towards becoming more like Christ.

Galatians 5:13-15 ESV

13 For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. 14 For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another.

15 Ngunit kung kayo-kayo ang nagkakagatan at nagsasakmalan, mag-ingat kayo, baka kayo'y magkaubusan.

THROUGH LOVE SERVE ONE ANOTHER.

The world has a different concept of freedom. It is doing anything a person wants without restrain. Can we consider a man chasing every gil he likes like a rooster to every every hen the symbol of true freedom? Ironically, this guy is governed by an uncontrolled passion. Unrestrained passion is slavery. Solomon says, “ A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.”[Prov 25:28]

Only the true believers who are really free. And it is doing what is morally right. And, they expresss it by overcoming the flesh in order to serve others. Christ has freed us from ourselves to become mindful towards others. They have the mind of Christ, who is God Himself but voluntarily became a servant. [see Phil 2:4-8]. Jesus even said, “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”[Mark 10:45]

Genuine Christians could truly fulfill the law, summarized in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” The apostle John even said, “Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.”[1 John 4:8]

As Christians, we are called by God to love others the way He loves them. This means, we do seek to serve them and not to use them for personal gain, don’t we? Therefore, let us not ‘give opportunity to our flesh’ to gratify its selfish desires’.[Rom 13:14] May “the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.” [2 Cor 5:14,15] Let us glory because “God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.” [Rom 5:5]

Is to serve the least and the lost your desire today? Have you been occupied about yourself licking your own wounds that you are not mindful towards others anymore? The change from wanting to be served to one wanting to serve is a great miracle the gospel has done in our lives.

Galatians 5:7-12 ESV

7 You were running well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth? 8 This persuasion is not from him who calls you. 9 A little leaven leavens the whole lump. 10 I have confidence in the Lord that you will take no other view, and the one who is troubling you will bear the penalty, whoever he is. 11 But if I, brothers, still preach circumcision, why am I still being persecuted? In that case the offense of the cross has been removed. 12 I wish those who unsettle you would emasculate themselves!

7 Kayo ay tumatakbo noon ng mabuti, sino ang humadlang sa inyo sa pagsunod sa katotohanan? 8 Ang paghikayat na iyon ay hindi nagmula sa tumatawag sa inyo. 9 Ang kaunting lebadura ay nagpapaalsa sa buong masa. 10 Ako'y nagtitiwala sa Panginoon, na hindi kayo mag-iisip ng iba pa. Subalit sinuman siyang nanggugulo sa inyo ay tatanggap ng parusa. 11 Ngunit ako, mga kapatid, kung ipinangangaral ko pa ang pagtutuli, bakit pa ako inuusig? Kung gayon, ang katitisuran ng krus ay inalis na.12 Ibig ko sana na ang mga nanggugulo sa inyo ay kapunin nila ang kanilang sarili.

A LITTLE LEAVEN LEAVENS THE WHOLE LUMP.

By Paul’s description that they were ‘running well’, he meant that they had embraced the true gospel and served Christ rightly. But, they were sidetracked. The effect was like a dough affected by a little lump.

Most spiritual errors can be traced to compromises perceived as insignificant at the beginning. Like a pinch of leavening that appear harmless, they may not had suspected that this particular false teaching could lead them away from Christ. A leaven of religious falsehood is quite powerful to influence us. Thus, Jesus had said, “Watch and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”[Matt 16:6]

Paul had adressed the severity of this drift. Thus, he expressed the resulting penalty of the person who led them astray. And, in no way, did Paul endorse or preach circumcision that perhaps others had thought. If, he did, why were these leaders persecuting Paul? What were they so angry about? Their teaching was an ‘offense to the cross.’

We need to guard ourselves that we won’t swerved from the truth. Our devotion to Christ is paramount, is it not? Thus Paul had expressed this to the Corinthians, “I wish you would bear with me in a little foolishness. Do bear with me! For I feel a divine jealousy for you, since I betrothed you to one husband, to present you as a pure virgin to Christ. But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ. For if someone comes and proclaims another Jesus than the one we proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or if you accept a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it readily enough.”[2 Cor 11:1-4]

Let us guard our hearts therefore that nothing can deceive us away from the gospel and its blessings.

Galatians 5:5-6 ESV

5 For through the Spirit, by faith, we ourselves eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness. 6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love.

5 Sapagkat sa pamamagitan ng Espiritu, sa pananampalataya ay naghihintay tayo sa pag-asa ng katuwiran.6 Sapagkat kay Cristo Jesus, ang pagtutuli o di-pagtutuli ay walang kabuluhan, kundi ang pananampalataya na gumagawa sa pamamagitan ng pag-ibig.

FAITH WORKING THROUGH LOVE.

The Judaizers may claim that to be righteous is by doing the circumcision or law. In contrast, true believers do rest on what Christ has done through the working of the Spirit. By faith, upon the Spirit’s working we obtain the righteousness. This righteousness is a gift of God in Christ. Paul said, “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”[2 Cor 5:21]

What should we do in response to the gift of salvation we received in Christ?

For this, John has written, “We love because He first loved us.” [1 John 4:19] Let us immerse ourselves in the love of God. Should we understand it more, behold it always, think about it all the time, we would be ever thankful for it.  Consequently, our obedience to Him will be effortless and natural. As John writes, “For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.”[1 John 5:3]

Let us not be tied up to any outward religion whatsoever, for Christ has freed us from this. Rather, Let us express our true faith express through loving others. This is the only thing that counts before God. Let us demonstrate our true faith by taking pleasure in loving others.

Galatians 5:2-4 ESV

2 Look: I, Paul, say to you that if you accept circumcision, Christ will be of no advantage to you. 3 I testify again to every man who accepts circumcision that he is obligated to keep the whole law. 4 You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace.

2 Makinig kayo! Akong si Pablo ay nagsasabi sa inyo na kung kayo'y patutuli, si Cristo ay hindi magiging pakinabang sa inyo. 3 At muli kong pinatotohanan sa bawat taong nagpatuli na siya'y may pananagutang tumupad sa buong kautusan. 4 Kayo'y hiwalay kay Cristo, kayong mga nagnanais ariing-ganap sa pamamagitan ng kautusan; nahulog kayo mula sa biyaya.

FALLING AWAY FROM GRACE.

A person couldn’t be both inside and outside of a room, could it be? Similarly, one can’t be in Christ and accepts the circumcision offered unto him. In fact, circumcision is useless. This incompatibility is confirmed by the apostle Paul.

Paul was blameless before the law[see Phil 3:5] Yet, he has stressed its uselessness. He said, “Was anyone at the time of his call uncircumcised? Let him not seek circumcision. For neither circumcision counts for anything nor uncircumcision, but keeping the commandments of God.”[1 Cor 18-20] “In him[Christ] also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ.”[Col 3:11]

Should a believer insists to accept circumcision, he is obligated to keep the whole law. Even James corroborates with this, saying, “For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it.”[Jas 2:10] It’s a ridiculous thought that a man who is freed would go back to bondage. In fact, Paul do strongly testify against them.

Is the sinner justified by keeping the law? No! Paul has declared, “Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith. For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law.”[Rom 3:27,28]

Is the box of more in value than the treasure? Certainly not! But, Paul had described these deceived believers who embrace the circumcision again by saying, “You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace.”[v.4] Like quenching a fire by water, the insistence of the circumcision do put the grace of God to nothing.  They severed the grace of God. That is why Paul said, “I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose.”[Gal 2:21]
