The city of Jackson, Missouri has been growing as of late and while growth is a good thing, it also presents some challenges. We sat down with Mayor Dwain Hahs for an update on what's happening in Jackson. Southeast Missouri State University will recognize the military service of veterans and their families with a new Veterans Plaza to begin taking shape in the Spring 2020 semester. The Veterans Plaza will be located between Academic Hall and Memorial Hall on the Southeast campus. It will consist of engraved bricks to honor the military service of alumni, friends, family members and others. The ribbon-cutting and dedication will take place on May 1, 2020. T he process is underway to renovate the historic Common Pleas Courthouse in order to return City Hall back to the facility. The city is operating on a $12 million budget for the renovation of the Common Pleas Courthouse and the Carnegie library, and they have selected architecture firm TreanorHL and Penzel Construction Company for the project. In January, Bruce Loy will be retiring from his position as manager of the Cape Girardeau Regional Airport. Cape Girardeau residents will soon have the opportunity to receive a notification when someone goes into cardiac arrest in a nearby public space. The fire department has partnered with PulsePoint, an organization and app, to ensure those struck by such a medical emergency can receive CPR in a timely manner. Fire Chief Travis Hollis says a lot of people think CPR is the “old mouth-to-mouth and chest compressions” when, in reality, receiving bystander CPR in less than a minute of a cardiac arrest

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences sent out an email recently containing private student and faculty information to about 50 individuals. Assistant Vice President of Information and Technology Floyd Davenport was consulted after the info was released about what students should do now. Davenport says much of the information was directory information, such as emails and phone numbers. For roughly seven weeks now, the city of Cape Girardeau has been testing out a new treatment process for turning “bio-solids” in residents' wastewater into a substance that could benefit the region in the long term.
