Lina and I are in Choachí, Cundinamarca this week, talking about the experience we had looking for property to buy in Colombia. My idea was to buy a piece of cheap land and build a house on it, which has been an adventure a year and a half in the making so far. Nothing is built yet, but we’re getting close to breaking ground.
We also talk about the Spanish cargo/treasure ship, the galeón San José, sunk in 1708 by British pirates, off the coast of Cartagena. Colombia, other South American countries, indigenous groups, American treasure hunters, and even the Spanish government are getting involved.
This week on the podcast:
1:12 - Buying land in Colombia
39:55 - San José galleon (sunken Spanish treasure ship)

A few months ago, I started to hear rumblings about Nicolás Maduro, the erstwhile dictator of Venezuela, wanting his country to annex part of Guyana, the tiny and (until now) politically insignificant country bordering Venezuela to the east.

Listen to this recent article from Gone Native read aloud by the author.
From the article:
"As the old Land Rover raced at top speed across the shimmering open air of a salt flat, its tires spewing a massive cloud of dust behind us, slipping back and forth on the odd pebble or pool of dust, in and out of the imprints of old tire tracks, bouncing up and down on the ancient suspension which felt as if it was about to flip over and kill us at any moment, I began to wonder if I made a mistake signing us up for this tour.”

Listen to this recently posted article on the Gone Native podcast.
From the article:
“In a surprising twist, Colombian underworld groups are facing increased competition from Mexican drug cartels, most notably the Sinaloa Cartel, on their own territory. Mexican cartel operatives are known as “ambassadors” on the ground in Colombia, and are now an increasing source of much of the violence, instability, and rural displacement, far from the borders of their own country.”
