Summary: Genesis 11 ends with the scattering of humankind across the face of the earth. No note of grace, only judgment. At this point in the narrative the attentive reader may be wondering, "Has God finally given up on humankind?" It's at just that point that Genesis 12 begins with the words: "Now the Lord said to Abraham." God speaks again. The story isn't over.

The God who majestically creates all things by his powerful word becomes the Lord God—the covenant God—who stoops down and forms a man from the dust of the earth.
