www.GoodMorningGwinnett.com Another judge has put a court order in place stopping the US Postal Service from making policy changes that would slow down election mail.

"Plaintiffs have also demonstrated that the combination of the reduction of late trips, extra trips and reduced sorting capacity puts the timely delivery of election mail at risk," Judge Emmet Sullivan of the DC District Court wrote on Sunday, in a case brought by a coalition of state governments including New York.

It's the third case in a little over a week where the court has blunted the USPS's changes as the agency is under extra scrutiny now that more Americans are set to vote by mail in November's general election because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Mellow Mushroom in Snellville will donate 10% of all food and drink orders to the Snellville Citizens' Police Academy Alumni group to support the city's police department. The restaurant is located at 2000 Main St. East.

There will be no inside dining so pizza orders must be take out or delivery.


There will also be raffle drawings for prizes such as an HP Office Pro Printer valued at $169 from Office Depot, $25 and $20 gift certificates from Main Street Restaurant, $20 Mellow Bucks from Mellow Mushroom, a $40 gift card from Culver's, a $25 gift card from Wild Wing Cafe and stuffed animals.

More than two years ago, Billie J. Elliott and her neighbors succeeded in fending off a proposed QuikTrip at the entrance to their Gwinnett County neighborhood.


Now, they’re battling again.

Tuesday, county leaders will hear another proposal to build a QuikTrip gas station and convenience store next to Elliott’s house, at the intersection of Jimmy Carter Boulevard and Hayes Drive outside Norcross.

Residents hope they’ll succeed in convincing county leaders that the project still does more harm than good.

County commissioners in 2018 rejected a plan that would have put a nearly 6,000-square foot building on three acres with 54 parking spaces, four entrances, 10 gas pumps and cafe-style outdoor seating.

In addition to the online application, potential substitutes must also submit a reference and a copy of their college diploma or transcripts. Applicants without a valid or expired teaching certificate, or experience student teaching in Gwinnett County Public Schools, must complete the district’s substitute teacher training program.
Substitute teachers are paid between $98 and $120 per day and can work both daily and long-term assignments, according to the district. Because of Gwinnett County’s hybrid learning format this semester, in which students were able to choose whether to return to the classroom or take classes online, subs could teach an in-person, virtual or hybrid class, the district said in a release. Hybrid classes have students in the classroom and watching through video conference technology.

County commissioners on Tuesday approved an early voting plan for November’s election that opens the main elections office and eight other locations for three straight weeks of early voting.

It’s the first time there have been nine places to cast early ballots, and the first time they’ve all been open that far ahead of the election. The hours will include two weekends.

The main elections office will be open for voting from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., while all the other locations will open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Early voting will begin Oct. 12 and go through Oct. 30.

The hours are those that were requested by the county’s bipartisan elections board. County commissioners voted 4-1 in favor of the expanded hours, with Republican Tommy Hunter voting no.

www.GoodMorningGwinnett.com The Gwinnett County district attorney race took a new dramatic turn Monday when the Democratic candidate, Patsy Austin-Gatson, filed a libel and slander lawsuit against her opponent, incumbent DA Danny Porter.

The lawsuit is in response to interviews Porter did with two local television stations as well as a press release he issued last week after he filed a complaint with the State Ethics Commission against Austin-Gatson and former Sheriff's candidate Curtis Clemons. Austin-Gatson and Clemons have claimed the allegations Porter made against them are false.

"Through such conduct, Defendant has acted maliciously and with reckless disregard for the truth, as his statements are made without personal knowledge of any of the matters alleged and the allegations have yet to be addressed by the Commission, which would be the adjudicating body," Austin-Gatson's lawsuit states.

Porter said he had heard rumors for months that Austin-Gatson and Curtis Clemons, who was running for sheriff, were using county resources to create, edit, print and deliver campaign materials. Both Austin-Gatson and Clemons work in the county solicitor’s office. So does Austin-Gatson’s husband, Travis Gatson, who was also accused of impropriety.

But Porter didn’t file a complaint until this week, when he learned of an incident in Hall County that was documented by an investigator in the solicitor’s office there. The investigator, Andrew Ledbetter, wrote in an incident report that Gatson was in Hall County to obtain a search warrant when he handed everyone in the room a business card with his wife’s picture on it and said the campaign “could use all of the support they could get.”
