What makes Sam Westfall with Valor Archery Challenge a good neighbor?
Sam Westfall's journey to founding Valor Archery Challenge began after being medically separated from the Army following a devastating accident where he was crushed by a tank. Facing divorce simultaneously, he spiraled into anxiety, depression, and PTSD – trying alcohol and firearms as coping mechanisms with dangerous results. Everything changed when a friend handed him a bow 15 years ago, introducing him to what would become his therapeutic salvation.
"I've used archery as my therapy for the last 15 years," Sam reveals, "and I'm trying to bring that over to the rest of the military and veteran space." This personal healing journey transformed into a mission to serve others through Valor Archery Challenge – a 3D archery event specifically designed for military and veteran communities while remaining open to the public. The events foster camaraderie outside traditional veterans' spaces while providing the therapeutic benefits of "slinging arrows."
Beyond the healing aspects, Valor Archery Challenge works to break stereotypes, particularly that archery is exclusively a male pursuit. "We want to see men, women, kids," Sam emphasizes, welcoming participants from Colorado Springs, Pueblo, and surrounding communities. The organization removes barriers to entry by offering rental equipment and coaches for newcomers. Military members and veterans receive special challenge coins, acknowledging their service while connecting them to a supportive community of veteran service organizations, outdoor groups, and veteran-owned Colorado businesses.
