Summary: Hebrews 12:3-11 is a call to persevere looking to Christ as our example. He endured the shame of the cross to bring us into fellowship with God. In the same way, we should keep our eyes on him as we run the race of life.
We must endure the disciplinary sufferings which God allows us to experience. An important point is that even Jesus himself had to be “perfected” through sufferings. If this is true of him, how much more is it true for all believers.
The passage addresses how God uses suffering & adversity in the lives of Christians. We’ve seen how the readers of this epistle were experiencing persecution & the hardship it brings. The author shows us how we can & should view suffering & adversity: Adversity in the life of the Christian is divine discipline.
Two things are proven by discipline: 1) God’s love for us 2) Our sonship.
There are three reasons for God’s discipline:
• Correction (of a sinful lifestyle)
• Prevention (going down paths into sin)
• Education (of God and his ways)
