Science and technology work hand in hand to provide us with some amazing information that we may or may not know about. We have taken for granted how much water we use in the normal course of a day and how much is used for everyday items. I came across a quiz about water usage that astonished me and I believe that you will be impacted when you hear some of these stats as well. For example, did you know that it takes 16 gallons of water to produce a 12 ounce can of soda? You probably are saying to yourself, “no way.” Well, think about it. You have to not only make the drink but you also have to make the container it comes in and ship it to market. All of that takes water. What about bread? A loaf of bread takes 150 gallons of water. A pair of jeans takes 1800 gallons for one pair. One cotton Tee Shirt requires 400 gallons. A quarter pound hamburger is 1300 gallons. An automobile factory uses 75,000 gallons of water to produce one car. So, in order for me to get dressed in a pair of blue jeans and a cotton shirt, eat a hamburger and drink a 12 ounce can of soda, and drive the car to the restaurant, I use up just under 78,000 gallons of water and that doesn’t even count taking a shower or brushing my teeth. Without a doubt, this little science quiz opened my eyes to how much water it takes to just live life. I am so happy that science and technology can raise awareness of the value of water to a much needed new level. I am confident that we can take this information and make better decisions in the future. Now that’s Good News.
