Text: John 17:11-19. In the gospel reading we hear Jesus' prayer to our heavenly Father: "I have given them your word, and the world has hated them, because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. I'm not asking you to take them out of the world, but that you keep them safe from the evil one" (John 17:14-15).
Today we come to the final two petitions in the Lord's Prayer, "lead us . . . deliver us..." St. Peter remind us that the devil is constantly prowling around like a roaring lion, looking for those whom he may devour. And, St. Paul reminds us that "our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavens" (Eph. 6:12). The devil knows our weaknesses. He knows what buttons to push in our lives; and actually, he knows us better than we know ourselves. His goal is to cause us to become discouraged and lose heart; hopefully, to get us to walk away from the faith.
This may sound bleak, but the good news is that God has access to the devil's game plan; He knows this opponent's weaknesses, and He has told us what those weaknesses are in His Word. God has given us a step-by-step summary, all found within Scripture. In it we discover everything we need to know in order to experience victory in this spiritual battle. So, Jesus knew what He was praying for when He asked the Father to keep us safe from the evil one, and when He taught us: "Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil."
