    Sermon text: 2 Peter 1:16-21

    The Trustworthy Prophetic Word
16 For we did not follow cleverly contrived myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ; instead, we were eyewitnesses of His majesty. 17 For when He received honor and glory from God the Father, a voice came to Him from the Majestic Glory:
    This is My beloved Son.

    I take delight in Him!
18 And we heard this voice when it came from heaven while we were with Him on the holy mountain. 19 So we have the prophetic word strongly confirmed. You will do well to pay attention to it, as to a lamp shining in a dismal place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. 20 First of all, you should know this: No prophecy of Scripture comes from one’s own interpretation, 21 because no prophecy ever came by the will of man; instead, men spoke from God as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.

43“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate
your enemy.’ 44But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those
who persecute you, 45so that you may be children of your Father who
is in heaven. For he makes his sun to rise on the evil and the good
and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46Indeed if you
love those who love you, what reward do you have? Even tax collectors
do that, don’t they? 47If you greet only your brothers, what are
you doing more than others? Do not even the unbelievers do that?
48So then, be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

44 Moses came with Joshua son of Nun and spoke all the words of this song in the hearing of the people. 45 When Moses finished reciting all these words to all Israel, 46 he said to them, “Take to heart all the words I have solemnly declared to you this day, so that you may command your children to obey carefully all the words of this law. 47 They are not just idle words for you—they are your life. By them you will live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.”

14Joshua said, “Now, therefore, fear the LORD and serve him wholeheartedly and faithfully. Remove the gods that your fathers served in the region across the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. 15But if you see no benefit in serving the LORD, then choose for yourselves today whom-ever you will serve—whether the gods that your fathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household—we will serve the LORD!”
16The people responded by saying, “Far be it from us to forsake the LORD in order to serve other gods! 17For the LORD our God, he is the one who brought us and our ancestors up from the land of Egypt, where we were slaves. He is the one who performed before our eyes these great signs and protected us on the whole journey that we made and among all the peoples through whom we passed. 18The LORD drove out of our presence all the peoples and the Amorites who were living in the land. We too will serve the LORD, because he is our God!”
19But Joshua said to the people, “You are not able to serve the LORD, because he is a holy God. He is a jealous God. He will not forgive your rebellion and your sins. 20If you forsake the LORD and you serve foreign gods, then he will turn and cause disaster for you, and he will put an end to you after he has done good for you.”21But the people said to Joshua, “No! We will most certainly serve the LORD!”
22So Joshua said to the people, “You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen the LORD for yourselves in order to serve him.” The people said, “We are witnesses!” 23Joshua said, “Now, therefore, remove the foreign gods that are among you, and turn your heart to the LORD, the God of Israel.”
24The people said to Joshua, “We will serve the LORD our God, and we will listen to his voice.”

13In a furious rage Nebuchadnezzar said to bring Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. Then these men were brought before the king. 14Nebuchadnezzar said to them, “Is it true, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, that you do not serve my gods and that you do not worship the golden statue that I set up?
15Now, if you are ready, at the time when you hear the sound of the horn, flute, lyre, harp, triangular harp, drum, and all kinds of musical instruments, you must fall down and worship the statue I made. But if you do not worship, you will immediately be thrown into the blazing fiery furnace. What god will be able to save you from my hands?”
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered and said to King Nebuchadnezzar, “We have no need to answer you about this matter, 17Since our God whom we serve exists, he is able to save us from the blazing fiery furnace. So he may save us from your hand, Your Majesty. 18But if he does not, you
should know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods, and we will not worship the statue of gold that you set up.”
Then Nebuchadnezzar was filled with rage, and the expression on his face changed against Shadrach,
Meshach, and Abednego. He said to heat the furnace seven times hotter than it was usually heated. 20And he ordered some men, soldiers from his army, to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in order to throw them into the blazing fiery furnace.
21Then these men were bound in their robes, their pants, their turbans, and their
clothes, and they were thrown into the middle of the blazing fiery furnace. 22Because
the king’s order was urgent and the furnace was extremely hot, those men
who carried Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego—the intense heat of the fire
killed them. 23But these three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who had
been bound, fell into the blazing fiery furnace.
24Then King Nebuchadnezzar was startled and immediately stood up. He said to
his counselors, “Didn’t we throw three men who had
been bound into the middle of the fire.
They answered the king, “Certainly, Your Majesty.”
25He said, “Look! I see four men unbound and walking
around in the middle of the fire unharmed. What is
more, the appearance of the fourth is like a son of the
    gods.”
26Then Nebuchadnezzar approached the door of
the blazing fiery furnace. He said, “Shadrach, Meshach,
and Abednego, servants of the Most High God,
    come out!”
Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego came out from the middle of the
furnace. 27The satraps, the prefects, and the governors, and the royal counselors
gathered and looked at these men. The fire had no power over their bodies. The
hair on their head was not singed, their robes were not damaged, and the smell of
fire had not stuck to them.

When Jesus heard that John was put in prison, he withdrew into Galilee.
He left Nazareth and went to live in Capernaum, which is by the
sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali. He did this to fulfill what
was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: Land of Zebulun and land
of Naphtali, along the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee
of the Gentiles, the people dwelling in darkness have seen a
great light, and on those dwelling in the region and the
shadow of death a light has dawned.
From that time, Jesus began to preach: “Repent, because the kingdom
    of heaven is near.”
As Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon,
who is called Peter, and his brother Andrew. They were casting a
net into the sea, since they were fishermen. He said to them, “Come,
follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
They immediately left their nets and followed him. Going on from
there, he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and his
brother John. They were in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending
their nets. Jesus called them. Immediately they left the boat and their
father and followed him. Jesus traveled throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues,
preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and
    every sickness among the people.

29The next day, John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look! The Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30This is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘The one coming after me outranks me because he existed before me.’ 31I myself did not know who he was, but I came baptizing with water so that he would be revealed to Israel.” 32John also testified, “I saw the Spirit descend like a dove from heaven and remain on him. 33I myself did not recognize him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘The one on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, he is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ 34I saw this myself and have testified that this is the Son of God.”
35The next day, John was standing there again with two of his disciples. 36When John saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look! The Lamb of God!” 37The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. 38When Jesus turned around and saw them following him, he asked, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?” 39He told them, “Come, and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying. They stayed with him that day. It was about the tenth hour.
40Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard John and followed Jesus. 41The first thing Andrew did was to find his own brother Simon and say to him, “We have found the Messiah!” (which is translated “the Christ”).

13Then Jesus came from Galilee to be baptized by John at the Jordan. 14But John tried to stop him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and yet you come to me?”
15But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, because it is proper for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John let him. 16After Jesus was baptized, he immediately went up out of the water. Suddenly, the heavens were opened for him! He saw the Spirit of God, descending like a dove and landing on him, 17and a voice out of the heavens said, “This is my Son, whom I love. I am well pleased with him.”

13 When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a
dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt.
Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”
14 So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for
Egypt, 15 where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the
Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”
16 When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious,
and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were
two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the
Magi. 17 Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:
18 “A voice is heard in Ramah,
    weeping and great mourning,
    Rachel weeping for her children
    and refusing to be comforted,
    because they are no more.”
19 After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in
Egypt 20 and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel,
for those who were trying to take the child’s life are dead.”
21 So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel.
22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father
Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream, he withdrew to
the district of Galilee, 23 and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled
what was said through the prophets, that he would be called a Nazarene.
