Good Theology - Part 9: Discipleship

Listen Later

Not every idea that sounds spiritual is rooted in the truth God has revealed in Jesus. Throughout the church’s history, well-intended teachings, traditions, and assumptions have sometimes shaped the way people understand the Christian life in ways that don’t fully reflect what God has actually revealed.

That’s why, in this series, we’ve been slowing down to examine certain beliefs and practices — not to be critical, and not to question the core truths of our faith — but to ask a careful and necessary question: Does this align with what God has revealed in Christ?

This week, we turn that question toward something central to the Christian life: discipleship.

For many people, discipleship is primarily understood as growing in biblical knowledge — learning more Scripture, gaining deeper understanding, and becoming more theologically informed. While those things matter, they are not the essence of what Jesus meant by discipleship.

In Scripture, discipleship is not defined first by what we know, but by how we live. It is a life shaped by obedience to Jesus.

In this teaching, we look at what Jesus actually calls His followers to, and how obedience is not about earning God’s favour or living under restriction, but about walking in the life He created us for. His commands are not burdensome — they are good, wise, and given for our flourishing.

As we come to understand this, discipleship becomes less about accumulating knowledge, and more about faithfully following the One who leads us into life.
