Storyteller Priscilla Howe travels the world with a head full of stories and a bag full of puppets. She tells stories without props, sets, costumes or scripts. What kind? Folktales, stories from books, her own (almost true) experiences and stories that tiptoe closer to jokes, Her favorite audience is the one in front of her at any given moment. Children? Yes! Teens? Definitely. Grown-ups? You bet. She tailors the storytelling experience to the audience. A full-time storyteller since 1993 and a former librarian, Priscilla lives in Lawrence, Kansas. She’s also searching for the best restaurant pie on earth.

The 2016 Summer Olympics games kick off this week in Rio, and to celebrate, the Watkins Museum of History in Lawrence currently has an Olympic-themed exhibition – as well as a series of events and activities – that celebrate Kansas- and Douglas County connections to the summer Olympics.

The exhibition is titled "Faster, Higher, Stronger: Douglas County Olympians,” and features a wealth of information, artifacts and interesting stories of athletes with connections to Kansas and Douglas County. There are even some interactive features and fun photo opportunities for the family to get into the Olympic spirit.

Brittany Keegan, Curator and Collections Manager with the Watkins Museum, joins us to tell us more about this exhibition and the history of Douglas County Olympians.

Drawing from elements of the natural world and the mind-body connection, Murphy creates richly textured canvases that immediately strike viewers with their physical depth, the surfaces eluding to the many layers that lie beneath.

"My work is meditative in both subject and technique, beginning with broad brushed underpainting on which lavish layers of palette knife strokes are applied, deliberately carved into and layered multiple times. My current work stems from an earlier series based on the neurology of memory as it relates to abstract works of art, but now relies almost entirely on intuition and the meditative process in painting to reveal the direction of each work, rather than a rigid set of rules. Each work addresses aspects of the human experience and persistence of the ego as it exists in a world much larger than ourselves, and the finished work embraces this duality."
