Released in 1980 to lukewarm reviews and singular praise for another powerhouse performance from three-time Academy Award winner Jack Nicholson, “The Shining” has gained acclaim and adoration since its debut as a masterclass in isolation horror. Based on a novel by famous storyteller Stephen King, the film adaptation occupies a unique space in the films based on the authors work. It is well-known that director and screenwriter Stanley Kubrick’s film divulges heavy from the book that it is based on, so much to the point where it is reported that a personal animosity between the two developed in the aftermath of its release. Despite this, however, the film stands alone as a horrifying and mercurial watch that leaves audiences aghast as they witness Nicholson’s character devolve into supernatural madness.

Writer/director Robert Eggers solidified his position as a filmmaker to watch out for in 2015’s “The Witch”. In his second directorial work, he presents audiences with a mercurial, deep, and allegorical tale of two men stranded on a lighthouse in the north Atlantic, that soon descend into madness. This film, deep in its mythological and arthouse roots, presents viewers not with just a passive story to observe on screen, but a challenging and vague tale of the high seas that requires active audience engagement to understand. Because of this way of storytelling, Eggers has delivered us a masterful piece of true cinema that demands to not simply be called a “movie”, but a “film”.

The Knights tackle the final film in the Ode to Groundhog Day, the mercurial “Donnie Darko”!

Given a very limited release in October of 2001 due to sensitive subject matter in relation to the tragic events of September 11th, “Donnie Darko” quickly gained a cult following and cemented itself as one of the most confusing, mysterious, and haunting films in recent memory. This film, while rounding out our examination of films featuring a time loop, does so in the most unique fashion out of the four featured on the GoodKnight Movie Club: as it offers one, massive loop that leaves audiences asking more questions than were answered.
