Google has developed an AI model called SEEDS that generates accurate weather forecasts at a larger scale and lower cost compared to traditional physics-based methods. SEEDS uses generative AI techniques to produce multiple weather scenarios faster and more efficiently. It focuses on the relationship between potential energy and sea level pressure, and can generate up to 31 prediction ensembles from just one or two "seeding forecasts". In tests, SEEDS successfully predicted the 2022 European heatwave, while traditional methods did not. The computing costs associated with SEEDS are described as negligible. This AI model shows promise in providing better preparedness for extreme weather events.
